Do You Prefer Red or White?

Do You Prefer Red or White?

The hummingbirds have hung around this winter so I try to give them fresh nectar every week. I decided it would be a nice change to give them red this week and they have been standing in line to get to the nectar.

Do You Prefer Red or White?

I am thinking they like the red nectar more!

Thanks for Reading my Real Estate Blog........

Hello Kristin,  I actually had a few feeders at my home on the ridge a few years back.  I read up a bit on this.  Was shocked to find the red is actually bad for them.  Clear is better and they will find it just as easily.  The real important item is keeping it filled for them so they know to find it when on a journey.  Mark

The picture looks beautiful:)

How did you make their food red? If it is adding an artificial color, I would agree with Mark.

Wow Kristin, you really caught it.  Do you make this potion for them?  The color is so intense and must really attract them.

Hi Mark Don McInnes, Sandpoint ,

Hi Inna Ivchenko,

You buy the concentrate in the bird department and add water. I normally make sugar water so it is clear.

Hi Joanna Cohlan ,

The clear I make but the red I purchase and it is a concentrate. They seem to prefer the red.

Good morning Kristin,  I got to thinking which is always scary .  I too always thought the red color is what attracted them.  I found one of my old pics to emphasize that clear is just as popular to them.  Mark

Hi Mark Don McInnes, Sandpoint,

That picture is fantastic. I am lucky to have 2 at a time. Early in the morning, I see a couple of tiny babies sipping from it. Most of the time they are fighting over it but once in a while they share.

Hi Patty Da Silva, Davie, Southwest Ranches Cooper City, Plantation, Weston, REALTOR ,

One of the reasons I got into Activerain was due to William Johnson and his fantastic hummingbird photos. I knew I needed a better camera and some photography skills to get these shots. Of course I learned so much about my business and tools to enhance it after joining.

Kristen, Mark Don McInnes, Sandpoint is correct, the red dye is harmful to the birds and can possibly damage their kidneys.  It's simple and inexpensive to make your own nectar.  No needs to worry about attracting the hummingbirds as long as you have the red/yellow flowers on the feeder.

Hi Bette,

OK, thanks for telling me this and I will start making the sugar water again instead. They will keep coming as they stayed for the winter and are used to sipping there.
