Throwback Thursday, Downtown Norfolk, VA

This image is from the Chrysler Museum Museum of Art newsletter. When I was a kid, we would take the ferry from downtown Portsmouth to Norfolk to go shopping.

When you are in the Norfolk, Virginia area, plan to visit the Chryslem Museum of Art for a wonderful experience.

THROWBACK THURSDAY

A Frozen Moment Downtown

From the Chrysler Collection, here's how downtown Norfolk looked in 1942. This oil-on-canvas work by Arthur March White shows the intersection of Granby and Freemason streets.

This painting was displayed in the window of Rice's Fashion Corner for International Museum Week in 1956, and in 1958 it was featured in an exhibition on why local subjects matter to museums. We believe that still holds true today.

Hello Roy, what a beautiful photo for your post. I so wish I lived in that era, great thing is there are so many museums and art galleries that would take us back to how it was then.

Roy- I love looking at old photos or pictures of what an area used to look like.  It makes you appreciate the long path that a city or town has followed.

What an interesting photo of oil on canvas! There's so much attention to details and based upon your blog post, it would be easy for me to understand how a painting like that could make you take a step back down memory lane. Memories like that should never fade and isn't it great that someone took the time to paint it way back then!!!

Hi Roy Kelley,

I like this photo and it reminds me of sites I have seen when I was a little girl and also our city of Riverside as we had a bus that went down the middle of the street all the way to Corona. Good memories!

Tom Braatz Waukesha County Real Estate 262-377-1459 - Note the Navy presence in this wartime painting. There were blackout rules at night and searchlights scanned the skies. The Norfolk Naval Base was a very active place and the Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth was just a ferry ride away.

It is sometimes a good idea to revisit old blogs and reblogs. We might even find some good ideas for new posts.
