17 Habits of Unhappy Realtors

In our industry, we see people all day long.  We all love working with the upbeat, happy individuals that are a joy to be around.  The miserable people that we work with is another story.  I recently was in a continuing education class, and one individual was/is a person that is not terrible pleasant to be around.  She complained about everything and everyone the entire time she had the opportunity!  I left wondering how that person actually makes a living selling homes!  Seriously, who wants to listen to that whining all the time?  It HAS to affect her business production.  Then, I saw a list online of Habits of Unhappy People, and I  thought A-HA!  Great blog topic!  I certainly will pay attention to my list of Habits of Unhappy Realtors.  Will you?

Chronic Complaining                   Palm Realty Homes
Yes, it is therapeutic to vent once in a while, but while many people can be sympathetic on occasion, a chronic complainer will outlive their welcome very quickly.  Especially is a people minded business such as ours.

Retail Therapy
Personally I detest shopping.  Yes, I do purchase essentials, but, you won't fine me browsing in a store unless my mother drags me along behind her.  Excessive buying can cause another problem...lack of funds, which can lead back to...chronic complaining!  Gee this is all starting to come together isn't it?  All I am saying is spend only what you can afford to, and don't use shopping as an anesthetic to your life.

Binge Drinking                           Palm Realty Homes

We have all been at company functions where that was that one individual who didn’t know how to say no to free booze.  I know of a Realtor who got liquored up one night and proceeded to call one of her clients and tell him how attractive she found him.  The big problem was, his wife was listening in on the line.  Needless to say, she lost the client...and her job when the client called her broker the next day.  

Worrying About the Future        Palm Realty Homes 

Yesterday is over, tomorrow is not promised, all we have is today.  Could you lose a deal? Yes.  Will that help you right now?  No.  Man up or refer back to number 1.           

Lack of Hobbies
Selling real estate is not a hobby, so we can’t use that.  If we have something else in our lives outside of real estate, we will live richer more fulfilling lives.  I love to dance the Argentine Tango.  I also am passionate about animal rescue.  At home I love to cook, which is why I need to Tango :)  Get a hobby.

Eating Poorly
No one love a good warm funnel cake with powdered sugar more than me, BUT, I can atest to the fact that a diet of junk and fast food will only bring you down.  Because I cook, I make sure that I prepare healthy meals for myself...preferrably organic.  Failing to do so can lead to a lack of energy, health and a lack of productivity.

This is not solely a femaleproblem.  In fact, I cameto the Space Coast to work with Palm Realty Homesanother Realtor who was a guy.  His gossiping and negativity (about everyone) and name calling made it impossible for me to work with him. I realized he knew a lot of people on the Space Coast, but had very few true friends. Probably because of his gossiping and name calling.  My choosing to not work with him was his loss and my gain.  Don’t be a person others will eventually start to avoid because of the things you say.

Holding Grudges  Palm Realty Homes
Again, just as with gossiping, holding a grudge against other people will ultimately hurt you the most.  Why would you want to hurt yourself?  Let it go and move on.  The man I mentioned above no longer speaks to his own brother for a situation that he created.  He didn’t like the way his brother handled the situation and has vowed never to speak to him again “until he apologizes to me”.  Seriously, be the bigger person.

Stop Learning 
When you stop learning, you start to stagnate.   We are in an industry that if we do not continue to Palm Realty Homes
learn, we will become stagnant and get run over by those that do learn. Keep up!

Not Following Through 
How many deals have we lost because we didn’t make a call or follow through on a commitment to a client?  This costs us money, follow through is crucial in this business.

Hating Your Job            

Very few people can hide hating their job.  If you hate your job, it WILL SHOW!  If you don’t enjoy being in real estate, do the rest of us that DO like this professional a favor and get out now.

Letting Negative Thoughts Enter Your Mind                  

Negative thoughts can affect our entire lives.  It is of the utmost importance that we not dwell on negative thoughts.  When negative thoughts do enter your head,
think of something pleasant immediately.  

Jumping to Conclusions   Palm Realty Homes

Not getting the facts and jumping to conclusions can lead to several of the above items.  Get the facts first!

Blowing Things Out of Proportion   
Another big no-no in our industry.  I personally don’t have enough time in my day to imagine non existant problems let alone blow them out of proportion.  

Keep your life in focus.

Not Having a Goal 
Seriously, if you don’t have goals, how do you know where you’re going?  Everyone has different goals.  As long as you know yours, you’re gold!

Worrying What Others Think  
This is kind of like Gossiping in reverse.  You can’t do anything about what other people think of you, so,
don’t put any effort into something you cannot control!

Wanting More Money                Palm Realty Homes  
One of the greatest things about our industry is, if we want more money, all we need to do is work harder and smarter.  Don’t revert back to any of the about traits...just DO IT!

Realistically, the above items are really just common sense, but sometimes it helps to read through them from time to time to keep us on track.

Kerry, very comprehensive and well-thought-out list! I am working on the 2nd to last one the most this year. Instead of pulling a Sally Field, "You Like Me! You really LIKE ME!!?" which she said upon receiving an Academy and has never lived it down, I'm focusing on letting that stuff GO! There probably isn't a single person in the world that EVERYONE likes. I could add Jesus and Mother Teresa to that list, too...so there you are.
