Homeowner looking for the least expensive way to freshen up their home when selling and giving it a makeover is to give their home interior and exterior a new coat of paint.

Keeping in mind Color Psychology, which is the study of color as a determinant of human behavior. Color is highly complex  and one which is open to the influence of a large number of factors.

Emotions are triggered by certain colors; learning the psychology behind color choices will help the homeowner determine which room gets what color.

Color on a Deeper Level

  • Red – considered to be romantic and passionate

  • Pink – warm, feminine and soothing energy

  • Orange – overwhelming, statement to brighten up senses

  • Yellow – optimism of happy emotions

  • Green – soothing emotions of renewal, grounded

  • Blue – both calming and energizing, mainly for calming

  • Purple – dramatic and quiet, eccentric and royalty, mysterious

  • Gray – sophistication, elegance, and calmness

  • Brown – security and relaxation

Least Expensive Way to Freshen up Your Home When Selling is to choose paint colors based on what is trending.

Speaking with your listing agent prior to putting your home on the market asking what buyers are looking for in room colors. Another great way to explore colors is visit your local builders and preview their model homes.

Color is cultural and has many meanings to different people, just because you like a certain color keep in mind it might offend certain buyers and cause you to lose a sale.

Bob, The comments here are all in alignment with my feelings about color. Color does trigger emotions and can turn people on or turn them off to a home.

If buyers are turned off by paint colors . . . they don't deserve to buy the house.  PAINT OVER IT!!  Geez, it's not that hard.  LOL

Paint is cheap! It is an investment that pays great dividends.  But stick with neutrals. Let the buyer get all crazy with trendy colors once it's theirs!! :)

Hi Bob -- the stage needs to be properly set for a home when it hits the market -- most buyers, although they may say otherwise, want a new home that is clean and fresh.  Paint is certainly part of that "feeling" and I think there are some regional and demographic differences which makes working with a professional who is in tune with the market to suggest the right choices.

Hi Bob.  When rehabbing or building I always go with boring neutral beige's.  It offends nobody.

Yes, a fresh coat of paint does wonders. Our advice is to keep it neutral which should appeal to more visitors...

Bob Ratliff -- I learned long ago to be very careful with color selections when listing homes. For example, one home that had a lot of green in it was very much disliked by a particular national group as it was the color of a rival country. But a fresh coat of neutral color does wonders, as does touching up the woodwork.

Good morning Bob. I have seen some real goofy colors and houses. Thankfully, most people can look beyond the colors and see what the house is all about.
