We have all been guilty of attempting to make major life changes to our diet, our exercise regime or by joining a new gym or club, just to see your efforts go to waste. But experts say that the best way to make positive changes in your life is to start small and build from there!
Starting with small changes instead of major ones allows you to experience the positive effects (both mentally and physically) that accompany a manageable life change, rather than the disappointment of not following through with your major intentions.
Remember that it takes approximately 66 days to develop or break a habit, so starting small allows you to make small, painless changes that you’ll stick with and you can build up from there! To help you get started here are some small changes you can make to your everyday life that will help you stay healthy:
- Park farther away at work or when shopping - It’s an old trick, but it works! Every extra step that you take helps you to stay fit and builds muscle and stamina. Especially if you do it every day!
- Drink more water – Staying hydrated is good for your skin, your hair, your wellbeing and helps to flush toxins from your system . One trick that works is to buy an inexpensive re-usable water bottle (usually 750 ml in size) fill it up every night and drink one whole container before you leave the house in the morning or on your way to work, and one more before the end of the day. Voila! That’s 6 cups of water before you even know it!
- Stretch when you’re waiting – Waiting for a bus, a ride, to see a doctor? Start stretching! It gets your blood flowing and your body moving.
- Think positive & focus on what you’re thankful For – Research has shown that a positive attitude not only sets your mind on a positive path, but also helps to build a healthier immune system and boosts your overall health! While you’re brushing your teeth each morning or night try to focus on at least one thing you’re thankful for.
- Eat your vegetables – A diet high in vegetables is good for fulfilling the Canada Food Guide’s recommended servings, vegetables also contain healthy phytonutrients which can help to reduce your risk of developing certain cancers. They also build up your immune system and help to maintain healthy brain functioning. Eating your veggies first with each meal will also leave less room for more unhealthy meal choices!
- Go outside! – Fresh air is not only fresh and rejuvenating; it is also full of feel-good negative ions, which may boost oxygen flow to the brain. Combining fresh air with exercise, like a quick jaunt around the block is even better – it boosts endorphins and energy!
