Lack of Insurance Trend
Great advice! As a GC we won't do any work with another contractor unless we get a liability insurance cert for the actual project we're working on. In most cases we also require a performance bond depending on the dynamics of the project.
Lack of Insurance Trend
When hiring a local company to do work on your home, be sure to verify that the company has proper insurance coverage to handle any problems that may occur during the repairs and improvements done by the contractors.
Many will assume that if the contractor is licensed with the State of California than they must have insurance. That is not exactly true. The licensing Board will require Bond Insurance and workers compensation insurance if the company have employees. There are not any Liability Insurance requirements required to maintain a general contractor's license or any of the specialty trade licenses.
So the contractor that you just hired may not be covered for damages cause will on the job. What can you do to make sure that you are protected? Require the insurance yourself.
As a part of the contract you can certainly require the contractor to have proof of insurance before beginning the job on your home. If he can not provide such proof, move on to the next contractor.
As far as checking the bonding insurance and workers compensation, this can be done online by going to the California State site and checking.
