Jaws, going off on Maui - Shootz Brah!

Jaws the legendary surf break and stomping ground of Hawai'i's tow-in surfing elite has been receiving some "big buggahs" over the past week. The giant wave sets can reach heights in-excess of 50 feet making the catching of the wave impossible with out the aide of a jet ski. Lets just say falling off the face of one of these waves is not unlike falling from a five story building except if you survive the fall you you have the added challenge of trying not to drown while tethered to a board. Then you have the next wave to negotiate. SURF'S UP!

Hi Kimo - That's wild. I used to know some surfers in southern California, and they were completely nuts. When the big Alaska quake went off in 1964, they were all out there, waiting for the "big one".

Aloha Dick, it hurts getting clobbered with an 8 foot wave let alone a 50 footer. It's amazing more people don't drown and a testament to the athleticism and skills of the Pro's.

There was an article I recently read about the amazing waves off the coast of Spain - must be lots of fun to go around!

Those look like  very impressive and dangerous waves.  Mother nature looks a bit excited this year.

I think I just saw about $14,000 in surfboards snap in half in that video!

I've always been fascinated by those that dare to surf these monster waves, Kimo.

Aloha Tammy, I surf but I can only imagine surfing these monstrosities.

Aloha Lisa, I have seen some enormous waves in Portugal nearly twice the size of these.

Aloha Kevin, It's typical winter conditions for us but dangerous none the less.

Aloha Kris, surprisingly everyone made it out fine, not sure about the boards.

Aloha Gabe, the shear energy behind these waves is monstrous.

Aloha Vegas Bob, I think it was a little shy of 50 ft but close enough.

I can't even imagine being at the shore and watching. My daughter is a surfer and I can't stand it.
