When you think of great urban parks across the country what is the first park that comes to your mind?

If you thought Central Park in New York, you would be correct since Central Park has been one of the most well-known parks in the United States since 1857.

Rise of the Great Park

Although Central Park is spacious at 843 acres, the Orange County Great Park is set to dwarf Central Park in size since the park will be 1,300 acres upon its completion.

What’s going to make the Great Park really unique is that the land the Great Park is being developed on will also be used for housing and urban development since the Irvine City Council approved FivePoint Communities in November 2013 to begin developing homes on land just next to the actual park.

What to Expect

Besides homes we can also expect many awesome public use amenities at the Great Park including:

  • Large sports park (176 acres)
  • 24 tennis courts
  • 185 acre golf course
  • 178 acre wildlife corridor
  • Soccer fields
  • Baseball / softball fields
  • Volleyball courts

History of the Land

Before being considered as the site of the Orange County Great Park the land was once the site of the Marine Corps Air Station El Toro, a longtime base which served the United States from 1942 until its closure in 1999.

After its closure the land was caught in the middle of an intense legal battle for year since many business leaders in Orange County wanted to develop the land into an International Airport but voters ultimately had their say paving the way for the construction of the soon to be Orange County Great Park.
