A place where wallpaper is in vogue and where fireplaces are not optional - that would be a house built in 1883. The Glenn House in Cape Girardeau is a living museum, faithfully restored by the Historical Association of Greater Cape Girardeau to capture details of the house as it was originally built and then remodeled in 1900 to its current Queen Anne style.
The Glenn House website says the house has been "faithfully restored and has many original architectural features, such as lights, plumbing fixtures, moldings, and wall treatments. Authentic period furniture graces its late Victorian interior.
"The Glenn House is a home preserved in time, a true historical treasure. With each room is as it was at the turn of the twentieth century, The House is a window into what life was like during the Victorian Era (1860 - 1900)."
Group tours can be specially scheduled year round. The House, grounds and Carriage House are available for rent to host special events. Regular tour hours are available on Saturdays and Sundays from 1 pm to 4 pm during the months of May through October. Tour prices are $5 for adults and $2 for children. Additionally, the house is decorated for Christmas with public tours available several afternoons during December as well as candlelight tours.
The Glenn House, at 325 S. Spanish St., is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Learn more about it and other area attractions at the Cape Girardeau Convention and Visitors Bureau at 573-335-1631 or 800-777-0068. Or check out the Visitors Bureau's webpage at www.visitcape.com.
