As I have started to blog, I've been told to "write what you know" (shout out to Shannon Milligan for the advice and direction). Well, I know KIDS and I know the FAN DISTRICT! So it seems only natural that I'd write about this topic early on.
When we moved to the Fan we didn't have kids and were even sure that kids were in our future. So as we were looking for a home, we weren't considering things like schools or backyard that could hold a swing set.
Fast forward 8 years and two kids later ... we've continued to love living in the Fan with our family (in the same house)! But it certainly has changed, as have the reasons that we love the Fan so much. While our late nights at Metro Grill have been replaced by early mornings at the Fox elementary playground, we've made adjustments. People are always asking me when we are planning on moving. The answer is always the same- NEVER. Then come the questions about what we do with our kids:
Backyard?: Nope ... we don't have a huge backyard. But with at least 5 parks within a short walk from our house, we have plenty of space to run, play and burn lots of energy. They playground beat anything that we could ever dream of in our backyard. Bonus- We don't have to spend all weekend doing yard work!
Schools?: Admittedly, I haven't officially been a parent within Richmond Public Schools. However my son will be starting kindergarten in the fall at Fox. Fox Elementary school gets rave reviews and I can't wait to be able to send our boys there. And you can't beat walking to school these days. We were also lucky enough to get our boys into Tabernacle Child Care Center, which is another amazing gem in the Fan. It near impossible to get in there so we don't take it for granted. Again, another place to walk to. Ever need a baby sitter and tried to figure out swapping car seats at the eleveth hour? Nothing better than having a sitter walk the boys home. LIFESAVER for a busy working mom.
Riding Bikes?: Yep, your kids can even ride a bike in the Fan! Really, they can. We've got great sidewalks througout the Fan. And they are wide enough for 2 bikes. As or boys get olders they'll be ablet to ride in the street ... after a few safety lesson.
In the end, I recognize that it is not for everyone. But it has been an amazing experience for our family and I won't change it for the world!
