This afternoon I was surprised by fellow AR friend Thom Abbott with a visit.  We visited at the office a while and then we headed to downtown Milledgeville.  We had a nice dinner at the Brick and then did a very quick (it was both dark and chilly) But I got to show off our former governor's mansion. It's really a beautiful building and I have actually had dinner in there once.

Phone: 478-445-4545

If you get to Milledgeville Georgia I highly recomment you visit the former Governor's mansion

Check out this virtual tour

The Mansion is the former Governor's Mansion from the era when Milledgeville was the Capital of Georgia.  Those years were 1804 to 1868.  Thought it was always Atlanta did ya?

Nope, Georgia was actually the fourth state capital after Savannah, Augusta, Louisville and before the fifth and current capital which of course is Atlanta, Georgia.  To read about the whens and whys here.

interesting. I wonder why they changed the city for the capital so much?

Have not been to this one, but have been to the current one in Buckhead on W. Paces Ferry Road. Very interesting, did not know it was that old.

Tammy, so is this where Jimmy Carter lived, or does it pre-date his governorship?

David Shamansky first Savannah fell to British forces, then it was decided Augusta was too far east for most people to travel to and then it was moved from Louisville because it wasn't a navigable river for trade, then to Milledgeville, which had major damage during the civil war. Finally to Atlanta.

Lise Howe dinner/theater with dinner at the mansion and a production at the local college.

Patricia Kennedy this predates Carter's birth even. Built in 1839

Joan Whitebook it is quite interesting

Indeed, a return trip to Milledgeville is in order Tammy Lankford !! I knew nothing about the college being there....downtown was so cool (both in how it looked and the brisk January temps) and certainly want to see it all in the light of day.

But the best part of course...was time with you!

Sharon Paxson I was so in awe of the inside when we had dinner there and it's actually undergone some renovations since.  When I was in college at Georgia College and State University the dean lived in that house.

Lisa Von Domek went a little more into the history of Milledgeville in tonight's post about the actual former Capitol building.  Now Georgia Military College Campus (where my husband went to college)

Aloha Tammy,

What a lovely Federalist styled Mansion in the Greek Revival style. I thought Atlanta was always the capital of Georgia, thanks for the history lesson. Is it the lighting or is the color of the building a light peach?

a hui hou,

Sharon Tara it was a wonderful surprise.

Kimo Stowell  it does have a hint of peach in the stucco.  I need to get some nice new photos in spring after the renovations.
