Drones....new technology....good or bad for Real Estate...

Some positives about using a drone to capture yet another view of a property might have some benefits, but have you thought about the problems as well?  I think it would be really neat to get a good view from the air of a property, especially a luxury property, or one with some land with it.  One way people have used to do this has been to pay someone who has a small plane to fly over and take pictures.  One way is to rent a boom truck to have at least a higher view of the home.  Both are not very cost effective.  Now you might want to buy a drone in order to fly over it and get a photo, or possibly a video of the property.  As of today drones have only been approved for recreational purposes, so doing this is not currently legal.

Looking at the drawbacks to using a drone is first....and it is huge, that we legally can't do this to help sell a property.  The FAA has to consider several things before they decide to allow this to happen in commercial venues.  If they allowed it....should they also allow companies to use drones as a method of faster delivery of packages?  Can you imagine having a package delivered to your home or business?  Will it be left outside if it is being left at a business?  Will people watch for where the next drone is dropping something to be able to pick it up and keep it for themselves, or resale what you have paid for?  How safe will it be to fly to your vacation spot if they have to watch out for drones flying in the sky?  If a bird can cause major damage to a plane, what would a drone do?

I found the following article interesting.....and that's what started me to think regarding this new technology.   http://blogs.wsj.com/washwire/2015/01/26/crash-near-white-house-a-blow-to-drone-lobbyists/

Our state has recently entered 5 new proposed laws and regulations against the use of drones. i think the drone issue is overblown. Aerial photography has been around for years. A very small % of sellers ever used it. Also, I can accurately predict that none of the buyers I'm working with care about seeing what a property looks like from 100 ' up. They want to see the house at eye level, in person, and up close. I jsut saw a sample of a video from drone posted the other day by an agent in this area. It was awful and the editing was choppy and didn't flow. I definately wouldn't hire any amateur drone operators with gopros hooked to a drone to shoot video. There will be a learning curve when / if drone use ever does catch on, but I will proceed without out.

Good point Jeff!  I'm not sure I would want to watch a video that doesn't have good quality and no editing....some get motion sickness from that as well.  It will be interesting where all of this goes.  I will stick with concentrating on good photography within my abilities.....which I am very picky about!

I see the misuse of aerial photography and video all the time. I am especially not enthralled with 2 to 4 minutes of unnecessary aerobatics by the drone operator. Give me a look at the rear exposure and its view and I'm happy, maybe a 10 to 15 second sneak peak tops! A video cam on a pole does remarkably well too!

I used to have a negative view of drones as well.  However, having recently purchased one and begun using it to showcase my listings, it is indispensable.  A few good shots from a drone can be priceless to a potential buyer.  For example, showing the home in relation to nearby parks, schools or other points of interest.

I will give you that drones are like guns.  In the wrong hands, they can be dangerous...
