The Grand Dame - Hotel Del Coronado

Hotel Del Coronado is designated as a National Historic Landmark on Coronado Island across the San Diego Bay from Downtown San Diego. It remians the 2nd largest wooden structure in the US.

Hotel Del Coronado

At the time the hotel was built in 1888, the Hotel Del Coronado was the largest resort hotel in the world,While that designation has been surpassed, it does remain one of the most opulent  Victorian beach resorts anywhere.

There is one bit of trivia that that I had discovered first hand. During world war II, the hotel was designated a " wartime casualty station" and unused land around the hotel was set up as a victory garden. There is still to this day a small designated area with a victory garden that still grows vegetables for the hotel's use.

Oh my William, that is one beautiful hotel! I would love to visit and spend a night or 2 there but, I suspect, the Grand Dame is out of my price range.

I've never stayed in the Hotel Del Coronado but I've been on the grounds a couple of times. It is as impressive in person as in the many wonderful photos that have helped make it an iconic image of San Diego. Thanks for sharing William Johnson.

Good morning William Johnson

The Hotel Del Coronado is quiet impressive and being the 2nd largest wooden structure in the U.S. makes it a must see!  Thanks for sharing and make yourself a great day.

One day I need to visit San Diego and see The Del Coronado a little closer up. The one and only time I ever saw it was from the deck of the Aircraft Carrier U.S.S. Kitty Hawk.  I had taken a 4 day guest cruise from Seattle, with my U.S. Navy son. From the ship's hanger bay, The Del Coronado looked very intriguing as we moved by.

Thanks for your Hotel Del Coronado photograph. We drove around it but never went inside. We need to visit your area again.
