My listing included a Black Lab.

Last year, I listed a single family home in a lovely area of Laguna Niguel.  It should be noted that it's hard to find an un-lovely part of Laguna Niguel.  Anyway....

The seller called me in a bit of a panic saying the occupants of the property said they were going to take their 12 year old Black Lab at the county shelter to be euthanized if the seller sold the house.  WHAT?!  I called my nice husband and before I finished explaining the situation, he said "Get the dog and bring him home."  Yes!  The dog's owners agreed to give him to me.

What a sweetheart of a dog!  I contacted the rescue group, FOCHP (Friends of Orange County Homeless Pets) where we fostered and eventually adopted our dog Otis to see if they could help.  Awesome FOCHP did just that.

They  found a wonderful mother and son who were actually looking for a puppy, but saw this guy and knew he was for them.  This nice family said they thought they needed this old guy more than he needed them.  It was very sweet and made me feel really good about handing him to his permanent home.

Great story, thank you for sharing. I was curious to see if someone had purchased the home and kept the dog but it still worked out for the family who needed the dog. Good luck!

Tanya Van Blake-Coleman - The house was a fixer in a very desirable neighborhood, so it sold quickly with multiple offers.

The nice couple who purchased the home were dog lovers who had a Golden Retriever.  They asked about the status of the dog and I think they might have seriously considered adopting him if we hadn't already found a great home for him.

Thanks Juli Vosmik.  I like to think that if presented with the same or similar situation, most of us would jump in to help in one way or another.

Being a good Realtor isn't always exclusively about real estate.

Selling homes & saving lives!  There's a new tag line for you Jill.  This is a great story - not sure how someone could just part ways like that with their dog...baffles my mind.

John Meussner - We just couldn't believe they were going to dump the dog.  We were glad they agreed to give him to us, though.  I cried when we handed him to the people who adopted him.  We only had him for a matter of weeks.  Twelve years and no tears blew me away.

Jill - I'm glad your story ended happily.  I don't understand how someone could just give up their family pet.

Pat McCormick - I don't understand how someone could give up a family pet, either.  Especially after 12 years!  I cry each time a dog we've fostered goes to their new home.

Two fosters who just stole our hearts are Janie and Jackson.  Who knew we'd fall in love with these Chihuahuas?  They were awesome and unafraid of our substantially larger dogs!

Very cool Jill. My labX (Jack) is 14 years old and still has a bit of puppy in him, can't imagine having him euthanized! I have tried to bring strays into our home until they could be found a loving family but Jack is not willing to share.

Jack waking up from a nap. Jack is 50% yellow lab (his mom, Samantha, was a show dog. Best we can figure his dad was some kind of a wirehair terrier)

Bob "RealMan" Timm - I'm so glad Jack the Lab mix still has his puppy-tude!  That's just the greatest.

Spike the Black Lab had only been around me when there were no other dogs around, so when I brought him home, he viewed our dogs as intruders.  He blocked them when they tried to get near me.  It took a few days, but we got through it.

Post a picture of Jack if you feel so inclined.  I'd love to see him!
