Ron’s Rustic Birdhouses Presents The 2015 Garden Blog

We had a couple of questions from last week’s introduction:
Kristin Johnston, Waukesha Realtor 414-254-6647 asked:
“I have an evergreen tree out back and I would love to plant something that grows well in partial shade/under the tree, acidic soil, colorful and hardy in WI! Anything?”
Best answer I have found is the shade variety of hostas, Kristin. But you can also try sweet woodruff, liriope, vinca vine and wild violets….if you need information on these, let me know.
Debbie Reynolds asked:
“I enjoyed your posts before. I want to grow more herbs this year and cilantro always dies on me. Any tips would be appreciated.”
Best answer It depends on how you want to grow this wonderful herb. You can grow it in pots or in the garden. Check out this link Wikihow….and let me know if you have more questions.
Gayle Rich Boxman wanted to help me out with some deer-resistant plants which is a question that always comes up. Here is a link to her great post….please leave her a comment, too! Thanks, Gayle Rich-Boxman Fishhawk Lake Realtor (503)755-2905
Debbie Laity asked:
“I do have a question...how good is wood ash for the soil and how much is too much?”
Best answer Debbie, here is a link to putting it in your garden with some cautions….http://extension.oregonstate.edu/gardening/use-caution-wood-ash-your-lawn-and-garden You can also add it to a compost pile and turn the pile and incorporate it well…and your plants will love you.
Joanna Cohlan asked:
“I can't wait to hear what you have to say about growing flowers in rocky soil and shady property - MINE!!!”
Best answer Joanna, this question deserves a bit more information and I have some good news for you, but it will be in another post….so stay tuned!
Great questions, AR readers…..keep them coming, and I will do my best to get great answers for you.
Happy Gardening!
Best, Ron
