Vintage Vermont Barn Becomes a Madeline Island Luxury Timberframe Home

Our Wisconsin affiliate real estate office, Madeline Island Realty, has an extraordinary new residential listing for sale (2120 North Shore Road, LaPointe, Wisconsin) which I would describe as the ultimate residential restoration project.

The owner of this Madeline Island luxury home started this project by contacting a company in Vermont that specializes in restoring vintage barns, adapting them for use in residential construction.  

The first step was locating a suitable barn frame.

These vintage post-and-beam framing timbers are carefully disassembled, cleaned, treated for the presence of insects and are packed for shipping to the buyer's preferred building site.  The massive structural frame was truck shipped over eleven hundred miles, from Vermont to Madeline Island (LaPointe, Wisconsin).

Once the frame had arrived on Madeline Island, a highly-skilled crew set to work reassembling the post-and-beam superstructure.

The process of erecting and reassembling one of these vintage structural shells is tedious and exacting. Some of the huge beams in this dwelling are twenty inches or more in diameter. 

Once the frame was sheathed, the home's interior was finished to the architect's specifications.

Vintage timber frame homes such as these can cost easily $325 to $400 per square foot.  When the project is complete, the finished result is dramatic and awe-inspiring.

A friend of mine describes the structure as "Ralph Lauren-esqe style on steroids".  The home is without question a massive organic structure, with a scale that matches the eighteen acres and nine hundred feet of Lake Superior frontage where it was built in 2003.
