CREATE SUCCESSFUL HABITS

By
Education & Training with Performance Development Strategies

I recently asked a Linked in Group if they thought lack or knowledge or bad habits created failure.  The overwhelming majority responded that it is bad habits that create failure.  When I started my business I asked another coach why most businesses fail.  He answered with the statement, "They spend all of their time getting ready to go to work."  The time Erase Bad Habitsjust never seems right or I have to learn to do more things or go to more training.

There seems to be a conflict with what the people on Linked In told me and why many people say they can't get going and ultimately fail.  It might be a mental block or blind spot but many people feel they have to learn more and prepare more to succeed but many have acknowledged that the habits and behaviors and not the lack of knowledge are the things that are causing them to fail.

Habits can be good but they can also be harmful. A bad habit can cause us to continue to do things that are non-productive or destructive. For example, you might have a habit of laying back and taking it easy. The end result could be panic when you are up against a deadline. The end result could be failure to meet the deadline or failure to achieve good results. All of this is the result of living in a comfort zone. That comfort zone exists for us because we are deriving satisfaction for our current habits. As an example, many people have trouble sticking to a diet because it is more comfortable to eat that extra “comfort food”. It would be more effective, of course, to consider the effect of that habit on health and weight loss and simply stop over eating and eating the wrong food. It would be more effective but it certainly is not easy.

Here is the good news. You can change your bad habits but it will take effort. It takes effort because you must reaffirm your commitment to change and take action although it may be uncomfortable. It is uncomfortable because the pleasure you derive from your old habit will get in the way. The mind is interesting that way. You won’t be able to pull out the old habit without replacing it with a new and perhaps better alternative. You can’t just pull the old habit out and leave a “VOID” there. So it takes effort to recognize and come up with a suitable and better alternative. When you move out of your old comfort zone you will need to create a new comfort zone. Failure to do that will result in continual stress and that will pull you back into you old habit.

Here is the reason why goal setting does not result in goal achievement. People may set goals and they may even write them down. But sometimes nothing happens because they fail to break old habits and take action. The old habit had its reward but was there sufficient reward to break the old harmful habit and credit a new one?

Let’s say you know you should be networking and prospecting but it is not comfortable. But you visualize the reward that more sales will bring—a better lifestyle, a vacation, and more peace of mind. With that in mind you can replace the comfort of inaction with the comfort of sales and prosperity.

KASH BOX

Finally, divide your goals into bite size action steps. You can’t eat an elephant in one sitting. Action steps are relatively simple tasks—a telephone call, an appointment set, a letter written. These relatively simple tasks add up to the accomplishment of something more significant—the achievement of your goal.

Great post Grant Schneider   It took me years to realize that when I write my goals I also needed to write down the things I know take me away from my goals. My traps I have pinned to my wall and when I see them creeping in I remember that now is not the time for that.  Get the Big Rocks in first.

Our habits determine what we will accomplish and what will not move beyond the dreaming /planning stage.  Action is required to accomplish and excel.  Habits can make or break a career.

Great read Grant I couldn't agree more. I  started working on getting out of my comfort zone and was doing well until recently. Reading your post was a reminder that I have to do the uncomfortable things to be the successful agent I hope to be, thanks for that.

It is hard...

It is really really hard to create great healthy habits, but it is absolutely necessary. It is much easier to stay home staring into tv box, than going to the gym or even walk outside. It is easier to order a junk food than prepare a home made fresh meal. But we must push themselves to do things the right ways, not the easiest.

Breaking bad habits is so hard.  I'm working on eliminating as many distractions as I can to help stay focused on what needs to get done in the day.  Prioritizing and staying on track are my first steps to achieving my goals for the year.  My old habit of trying to juggle too many things at once is slowly going away

Hi Grant...Follow through is vital to success. My worst habit is probably procrastination. Not in all areas of my life but in some and that is where I need improvement.
