I was out in a driving rainstorm yesterday showing homes to a client and his family. It was a miserable day. Buckets of rain coming down. Everything that could go wrong was going wrong.
We were in three separate cars because the client had met us at the first house along with his octogenarian parents who had driven separately. I walked to the door and rang the bell to make sure no one was home. This was after we had all parked in the long driveway in front of the garage (we were looking at 1+ acre properties). Unfortunately the owner answered the door and said he'd be leaving in a minute. Of course all of us had left our cars in the pouring rain and had to move them so he could back his monster truck out of the garage.

Not happy. Blood pressure starting to go up.
We arrived at our next house right on time for the showing. Unbelievably, that owner was also home, and he too had a monster truck that had to be backed out of his garage. This time my clients and his parents had learned their lesson (smart folks) and were waiting in their cars in the pouring rain for me to wave them into the house. By this time I was pretty well soaked to the skin.
Before the owner backed his truck out of the garage, he yelled to me, "Good news, the insurance will cover everything!" Not having a clue what he was talking about I said something really intelligent like, "What did you just say?"
He said, yep, the damage from the fire was going to be fully covered so not to worry. I was stunned, since I had heard nothing about this from the listing agent, and there was no mention of this on the MLS, but since we were all there, in the rain, we pulled back into the driveway and with great trepidation, entered the house.
As we went from room to room we noticed that everywhere we looked we saw smoke damaged ceilings. The house smelled terrible and although there was no charring, there was a large blackened area on the wall above the fireplace. Oh My Gosh! I was embarrassed and angry that I had no clue that this problem existed. My wife Tammie said I had my "Angry Eyes" on! Oh well.
After this wonderful showing his elderly parents departed (not surprising) and we moved on to look at two more homes. Uneventfully.
It was an awful day in the rain, but I don't think I'll ever forget this owner yelling at me that there was actually good news, "The insurance will cover everything!" Sheesh, the things we deal with!
