Is Your Real Estate Business Ready for MillennialsThe largest generation of consumers is now considered to be Millennials or Gen-Yers.  Those 80 million people in the United States born between 1980-2000 have a totally different expectation when it comes to the consumer experience.  Because Gen-Yers have never experienced life without technology, they expect those  they work with to be well-versed with all things technology.  So how does this apply to real estate agents?

Have a Smartphone

Sounds basic, but you have to start somewhere. Have you ever noticed that  Millennials always (or almost always) have their phone in their hand?  It's as though they have a fear of missing out on something important.  Their smartphone is an extension of them.  If you show up with a flip phone or an older type of phone you will be viewed as old.  They may even secretly take a picture of your phone and post it on Instagram.  But seriously, if you want to attract younger clients you'll need a smartphone.

Embrace Technology

Keep in mind that Millennials have never known life without the Internet, without wifi, without email or without ATM's.  Boomers often still live in awe of technology because they can remember a time when everything was written by hand, delivered in person or communicated via a land line.  Millennials expect you to use technology.   If you aren't already, it's time to get super comfortable with all types of technology.  It's imperative that you now how to scan and send documents and use electronic signatures...just to name a few.   Millennials want and expect good service, fast.

Use Social Media

You've heard it before and I'm going to say it again, you must be on some type of social network.  Most Millennials have decreased their use of Facebook, however they are big on Instagram, Tumblr and SnapChat.  But regardless of the social media platform you decide to use, make sure you let your personality shine through.  Whatever you do, do not post all things real estate.  Social media is just that, social.  Social media is a great way for the consumer to get to know a little bit about you...the person, not the real estate agent.

Dress the Part

Of course you'll want to be age appropriate, however you don't want to look like their grandparents.  Remember, Millennials move at lightening speed and want to work with someone they perceive can keep up with them.  If you're looking like a granny they may think you are behind the times and slow.  Take a look at your head shot, your web site and your other marketing materials.   Do you look current or do you look dated?   Ask someone you trust and respect for their honest opinion and update your look.

Grow Your Business

If you want your real estate business to grow, at some point you will need to appeal to this huge younger generation or you will go out of business.  It's no longer business as usual.  When you implement technological enhancements as they are introduced, it is less overwhelming than trying to play catch up.  Your real estate business can't afford to ignore 80 million people.
