Sometimes You Have To Shovel Sh**!!!

Yesterday we got about six inches of snow at our house.  It was followed by about an inch of ice.  Not pretty.  Our "third child" Sam the Amazing Wonder Dog, was having difficulty walking on the icy snow.  She's fourteen and not as nimble as she once was.  So we were concerened for her.  And we were also tired of her using the 2 feet in front of the back door as her bathroom.  So I did what any good dog-father would do.  I took a shovel and cleared a 12 foot circle for to venture out onto the grass.

Shoveling the snow wasn't too difficult (it was heavy), but the smell was pretty unpleasant.  There was good amount of yellow and brown snow that had to be shoveled away.  But as uncomfortable as it was, I did it for Sam.

Then I thought about it.  I guess that shoveling the sh** was sort of like prospecting.   Not to say prospects are anything less than wonderful.  But prospecting, especially calling and door knocking can be VERY uncomfortable.  The last thing the owner of an expired listing really wants is another agent calling or ringing the doorbell.  They just want to say NO!

Or at least that's what's in our heads before we do it.  Sometimes we're pleasantly surprised when they are happy to speak to us.  We need to get through some (sometimes a lot) no's to get a yes.  But think of every "no" like another shovel full of dirty snow.  When I get that "yes" it's like seeing a happy Sam scampering around her little circle of frozen grass.  It's about being OK with fear.  It's uncomfortable, but I do it for my family.

So yes, I guess sometimes we do have to shovel sh**!  But it's worth it in the end.

The photo is NOT Sam, but I thought it was cute.  Here are a couple of other links to posts about Sam the Wonder Dog barking and eating goldfish.

Awe! I had to shovel some grass for my high maintence dog too.

But it's true, and for any sales position think of every "no" as being one "no" closer to to a yes. Prospecting can be very uncomfortable, but think of the end result...and treat yourself for your hard work!

The Yes is often worth shoveling through the sh** for and I am glad that I haven't had to shovel snow in addition to the sh**, haha.

Wayne and Jean - We all have to shovel sh** no matter what job we have, it just seems to be everywhere. The better we get at clearing that path, the more success we can obtain. Great post.

Inna,

The "potato incident" sounds like a great title for a blog.  We'll have to work on that.  BTW, we LOVE the card!!!  Thank you so much!

Not only have we shovel so our little daschund's paws can reach the ground through the snow but in the past Larry has built a tunnel for him and a ramp with non skid on top so the icy stairs are not a problem.  What can I say, we treat him like we want to be treated...

Funny story.

In DC, I usually don't get to shovel much (especially compared to my Boston/NH family & friends this year), but living in the city, I get to scoop and scoop and scoop.  Whether shovelling or scooping, it's the same smell.

I'm rather amazed at your ability to reference you prior posts; someone in the family must have a Librarian degee of some sort.
