Are You Marketing Correctly?  Make Sure You Spell Check Your Marketing Material!

Some people will mention that they are on MySpace.  Really?  When was the last time you marketed a home there?

Some people talk about being tech-savvy (like me) and yet they say they market on Crag's List, Facbook or ActiveRian.

Well, if you can spell that well, I am sure you have some followers that are making fun of you here.

If you haven't updated your profile page in the last year....do it NOW.

The other issue you must face is that there are words that will show up correctly, but the usages will be different, i.e., effect for affect, their for there, etc.

You will definitely want another set of eyes reading your material.  And, you want someone who has a grasp of language and usages.  It is better to invest a few dollars, especially if you are marketing a middle- to upper-class property.

Do it right, and you might get the business.  Do it wrong, and clients will know your lack of expertise right from the start.

Take the time, and spend some money.  The rewards will be worth it!

I once got a free monthly "subscription" to a service in exchange for spell-checking their emailed promotions, which were cool, but the grammar was ______. So, yeah, do your own as it helps YOUR image.

I teach a writing class at a community college.  What I see would scare you to death.  Most of the students pay not attention to spelling and have turned in papers written like a text message.  When they get low grades, they are shocked.  Many complain to the dean.  However, despite pressure to modify my grading so that the students' feelings are not hurt, I refuse to change the grades.  My rationale?  If I hired you to work in my office and you turned in work like this, I would fire you.  After all, the program I'm teaching in is designed to prepare people for the workplace.  I think the reliance on technology and the decline in reading has been a negative influence on the ability to write well.

As an aside, the U.C. Berkeley students I hosted as interns were the opposite. They could write well.  There is hope for us all.  [It made me extra happy, since I went to U.C. Berkeley...]

Althea, I just met a young man this evening who is thinking of attending either Berkeley or Brown, so this was serendipitous.  I hope that the new-found skill of texting certainly doesn't replace writing.  I know that you will be one of the few that will keep a vanguard for vigilance against sloppy writing and comprehension!  Thank you not only for your comment but also for your work.

Thanks, Addicted to Perfection....that was misspelled as well as Crag's List and Facbook.  I think those were the only errors in my post. But, I am glad you caught the last of the three.

One of my own favorites - - Several years ago I made a phone call to a former client who I knew was getting ready to sell their home in a few weeks. The next day I followed up with an email which began:

Xxxxxx,

It was god talking to you yesterday . . . .

I did get the listing - - after all, not everyone has the opportunity to have their home marketed by 'god'!

Is MySpace still around?  I was never on it, but I thought it went away after Facebook took over.

That is great - MySpace!  Wow!  It can be tough not to have autocorrect mess you up on txt messages, but for marketing, I would think it would be a no-brainer to have someone double-check your work!

Suzanne, you've struck a nerve with your post. Paying attention to details like spelling and grammar is rather like staging a home - first impressions matter!
