Tags for Your Blog Posts Here On Active Rain

I just found out that my tags are too long-

"I'm not sure exactly what is considered "too long" for our system yet. I would suggest to make sure that tags are fewer than 10 characters. If you find yourself having trouble with even that, then maybe leave out the tags for now or leave out any spaces in your words. Please let me know if you experience this issue with shorter tags so that I can pass that information along to our tech team."

I wrote a post last week about ice damming.   It was very time sensitive, because I was attaching the short url to an email I was sending out to a lot of people.

The blog post kept kicking out into Draft form, everytime I published it, and would also kick out my photos!     I had been struggling for over 12 hours to get this straight.

Finally, my email went out on the time I had scheduled, and then the barrage of emails about why was the link sending us to sign up for Active Rain?

I called support, and they simply said they would create a ticket for it.   I yelled - "NO!"     The last time I created a ticket, it was 4-5 days before any response.    UGH!

Now, I have gotten this response up above ....

Weren't we taught that "long tail keywords" are the best?

If you know more, please help me out here!

Good morning Dagny. I did not know that there  were these stipulations on tags. Thanks for the heads up and very timely post.

Good morning Dagny. What a great topic, not something I have been paying attention to, so thanks for the wake up call.

I've never paid too much attention to the tags -- although evidently I should have been.  I like Debbie's thought that they might not be needed at all; but I also think if I do use them, I'm going to have to keep it short.

Well, this actually helped me a lot.  I was stressing over those tags--I keep making up new ones every day.  I am going to stop.  I have had issues this week with AR, too.  When I post my blog to my fb sites, someone elses picture shows up beside the post.  I got quick responses from AR, but basically they cannot figure out why its happening.  Hope it all gets corrrected soon.

Good morning Dagny,

Great topic..I like Susan Nealey have always stressed about the tags! I can see that is wasted energy spent. I've been getting the same thing if I post to FB, someone elses picture shows up besides my post! AR said they do not know and it wasn't happening on others..hummm...that's not true.

Dorie Dillard, who shows up on your posts?  Sharon Tara is always on mine and she even said others have told her the same thing, so we are not alone.  AR finally told me not to use the links at the top of the page to post to my fb.  I now have to post it myself manually.  Sorry, if I hijacked this post....

I use tags of single words separated by a comma.  Or, very short tags.  I've never had them bounced back.

I tried to use numbers in my tag for the years like 2014 and 2015 and it kicked my blog post out until I removed the numbers. Other than that I haven't had much issue with tags.

Dagny -- I have used tags the way Bob taught. Never had an issue. However, I have had what happened to you happen to me. Then it just went away.  So I don't have an answer. Am interested in what support has to say definitively.

Good to know the problem is too long tags. I've had my posts not publish on occasion as well.

Maybe I don't understand this at all, but I thought tags were for our use only - to help us locate our posts.  I didn't think they had any importance as far as SEO.

Dagny, I believe tags are just for internal use and our outside blogs. You want to keep the tags short. For example, when I write a market report, I use the neighborhood name, market reports, home value. That's it. Separated by commas.

Here is new information.  I have been hearing long tail, long tail.  I probably misunderstood and related that to Tags.  Good post.  Mark

Dagny Eason ~ very interesting! I have always made new tags for each new post, & I always try and keep them short and sweet... With that said, I really don't have a great understanding about "tags" Hopefully I will lean a lot more by this post and the comments

Hello Dagny,  I have started using broken short tags from my longer ones.  And only use a total of about 3 different no matter the subject.  I was not having problems before but with comments to this blog sounded as though I was wasting my time doing more than that with tags.  SEO not paying much attention any more to tags I guess.  Thank you again for the post.  mark

Dagny Eason - It's terrible that AR invites were sent out in the email you so carefully crafted!  The recipients think you did it and it puts you in the awful situation of having to explain.  Yuck.

The support response was pretty unsatisfying.  Hopefully, the come up with something better.

I try to keep mine short and it helps with finding posts I am trying to search. I didn't know it would kick it back to draft. This informatin needs to be shared by AR unless of course they had no idea.
