Nothing Says I Love You Like Bacon

Nope, this is a serious topic.    B.A.C.O.N.

The almighty pig has delivered what some might say is true-love.  I might be one of those that say that.  And the rest of my family.  We are bacon fanatics.  Maybe that is why we raise American Guinea Hogs in our free time.  Yes they are cute and sweet, but, alas, more importantly, they are delicious.

(Picture of the Valentine's bouquet I gave my daughter... yes, those are bacon roses...)

It appears we are not alone in our lust.  Bacon sales continue to climb 13% year after year here in America, and already in 2015, we've jumped 4.5% in sales from 2014. And bacon costs to consumers climbed 10% last year due to to a recent awful disease that has hit the poor piggies living in factories, and killing off a giant portion of them,  hence price hikes.  Yet just yesterday, pork slaughtering in the US reported an 18% gain. No one seems to be slowing down on their all-things-bacon love, but Americans spending $4 Billion annually in pork doesn't compare to China.  China consume six times what Americans do in Pork, and Germany, Spain and Italy outrank us all, per capita.

Everyone loves bacon.  Say it with me BA-CON!  BA-CON!!  BA-CON!!!

But let me reign this in a little and offer a bit of common sense advice here - from a farm-girl's perspective in Oregon.  We have to stop supporting an unhealthy system of agriculture that puts the almighty dollar over the health of our planet and our people.  If you love to eat meat - like I do - then work to find sustainable solutions for you and for the all-loved-piggies.  Seek out small farms that raise animals humanely and with quality feed and ample sunlight and space for animals to run and frolic and turn into happy, tasty pigs.  And buying by the animal is more economical in the long run. There, my public service announcement.  And now some gratuitous pictures of my pigs.

Happy Valentines Day, friends!  Now back to work...  :)

We have a place here in Michigan that does a huge business because they put piles of bacon on the plate.

Janell- I must admit that when i eat meat, my meat of choice is pork.  I love bacon.  However, several years ago we were at our son-in-law's family's farm and unfortunately, there were pigs on the farm.  It took me a while before I touched bacon.

Russ - For sure - Michigan is one of the top producers in the US. They recently made it illegal to have free-range pigs, so my little farm would be illegal in your home state.  Interesting the regional differences.

I know what you mean, Kathy.  Farming causes me to pause before I consume and feel grateful for the life that has been given to feed my family.

Good evening Janell Kittleson ,  Those piggies are so cute.  Bacon is a favorite in my house, although we don't eat a lot of it.  Even my dog loves bacon!

Your little pigs are very cute!  We like to eat the wild pigs which are a nuisance on our cattle ranch. I shudder at the way factory pigs are treated and try to avoid buying into that.

Wild pigs... wow, that's neat!  What sort of trouble do they cause on your rance, Georgie?  How does the meat compare to domestic, store-bought?
