The Desert Sands Unified School District was founded in 1964 when the California Department of Education consolidated all of the Indio public schools. The school district now covers Indio, La Quinta, Palm Desert, Indian Wells, Bermuda Dunes and Rancho Mirage. However, in Indio, part of the city south of Avenue 48 belongs to the Coachella Valley unified school District and in Palm Desert north of Frank Sinatra Drive belongs to the Palm Springs unified school District.

The Desert Sands Unified School District has 21 elementary schools, 4 middle schools, 4 high schools, 2 continuation high schools and one independent study school.

 The top school in the school district is the Gerald R Ford elementary school located in Indian Wells. This school received a 9 out of 10  by great schools.org.  Also coming in at 9  is the George  Washington charter school in Palm Desert. It has an API score of 906 and many parents say they have nothing but positive experiences with the teachers, counselors and principal at the school.

 

Those that score an 8 are the James Earl Charter elementary school in Palm Desert, the Palm Desert high school and the Palm Desert Charter middle school.  According to education.com the highest test rating came from the Palm Desert middle school for grades 5-8.  The school serves over 1200 students and because it is a charter school,  it differs from traditional schools in that it is independent and operated by educators, parents, community leaders, and educational entrepreneurs.  The school's API, or academic performance Index has a score of 878. This scale ranges from 200 to 1000 and is calculated from the school's performance in the standardized testing and reporting program. 

Which school should I go to in Palm Desert?

 The Palm Desert high school has an API score of 825 with a rating of 8 out of 10 from GreatSchools.org.  Even students have said that the teachers are amazing and very welcoming.
