San Antonio, TX has celebrated the Chinese New Year with fire crackers, lion dancers, and a number of other events for the last 27 years. Now, the tradition continues as the Institute of Texan Cultures proudly presents the 28th Annual Asian Festival, celebrating the Year of the Ram this weekend on February 21, 2015 from 10:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M.
The Asian Festival has grown over the years well beyond just the New Year celebration, and has become a gathering for many of San Antonio's Asian communities, which include those of the Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia, and the island nations of the Pacific.
The variety of foods has been one of the defining features of the Asian Festival since the beginning. The authentically prepared recipes are done in a traditional fashion. A quick glance at the menus shows samosas, bubble drinks, Chicken Biryani, Korean--style Chap Chae noodles with vegetables, and Daal lentil soup among the many offerings. See the Asian Festival Guide for more information on schedule of events, menu, legend, a map, and more!
Some of the activities and events scheduled are:
- Lion Dance Parade
- Traditional Asian performances
- Martial Arts demonstrations
- Cooking demonstrations
- Lectures of a variety of topics
- Bonsai and Ikebana flower arrangements
- HEB childrens' craft tent
- Asian Libation Station featuring a variety of Asian beers
- Plus more!
