San Antonio, TX has celebrated the Chinese New Year with fire crackers, lion dancers, and a number of other events for the last 27 years. Now, the tradition continues as the Institute of Texan Cultures proudly presents the 28th Annual Asian Festival, celebrating the Year of the Ram this weekend on February 21, 2015 from 10:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M.

Asian Festival in San AntonioThe Asian Festival has grown over the years well beyond just the New Year celebration, and has become a gathering for many of San Antonio's Asian communities, which include those of the Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia, and the island nations of the Pacific.

The variety of foods has been one of the defining features of the Asian Festival since the beginning. The authentically prepared recipes are done in a traditional fashion. A quick glance at the menus shows samosas, bubble drinks, Chicken Biryani, Korean--style Chap Chae noodles with vegetables, and Daal lentil soup among the many offerings. See the Asian Festival Guide for more information on schedule of events, menu, legend, a map, and more!

Some of the activities and events scheduled are:

  • Lion Dance Parade
  • Traditional Asian performances
  • Martial Arts demonstrations
  • Cooking demonstrations
  • Lectures of a variety of topics
  • Bonsai and Ikebana flower arrangements
  • HEB childrens' craft tent
  • Asian Libation Station featuring a variety of Asian beers
  • Plus more!

Since parking may be a concern for downtown San Antonio, participants are encouraged to use the VIA Park & Ride services from the Crossroads location just off IH-10 West. Tickets are $8.00 for adults and $5.00 for children ages from 5 to 12 years. Tickets can be purchase online at Texan Cultures, or at the event.

Hi Jerry - Chinese New Year is always a fun celebration with the fireworks and great food- I got to experience it in Hong Kong once. It sounds like San Antonio knows how to do it well.

Yes, Sharon. I love their traditional clothing too, especially those from Korea, since my wife is Korean, and she has educated me on the culture.

Sounds like a lot of fun, Jerry. And as someone who was born under the astrological sign of the Ram, I'm following this year's Chinese events closely.
