The Year of Being (Not Getting) Organized – Some Food Tips

How do you manage your grocery shopping?  Is it hit or miss?  Do you forget the one item you needed for tomorrow night’s meal?

Sometimes, you will have to pick something up for a dinner or breakfast because you forgot the eggs. It happens.

But, I now have a system in place.

The plan is simple....you can do it on a laptop or a smartphone.   There are four components.... a master shopping list, a master price list, recipe roster and daily food diary.

You inventory the items in your pantry, refrigerator and freezer. Then itemize the frequently used foods in the standard repertoire of recipes.  Then look over past grocery lists or grocery receipts for what you frequently buy on those many trips to the store.

Now, conceivably, if you can keep track of the sales and clip a couple of coupons here and there, as I do, you have it all together.  I can shop sales, and buy as I did recently four pounds of butter at half-price.

And when Himself asked me why we had four pounds of butter, I replied, sweetly, "Well, dear, it was half-price, keeps nearly forever, but not when I make those killer chocolate-chip cookies that you love so much”.  Even the Barefoot Contessa would have been jealous.

Now, when you find a great recipe you want to try...no more checking to see if you have the Cajun seasoning you need....or the bread crumbs.    Your list will let you know....and you can stock up on the sales when they do happen by.

Happy eating….and happy saving….

Suzanne, I'm afraid I'm not that organized when it comes to grocery shopping.  I do take advantage of sales though and because they are somewhat cyclical, I am usually pretty well stocked up.

Suzanne, I have an app on my iPad that I depend upon.  I inventory everything on it by bar code, how many I have etc..  and correlate it with menus for the next two weeks.  The app makes out my shopping list if there's something that's not already in my pantry.

Good morning Suzanne. We are fortunate to have the different options when it comes to food. Our pantry and freezers are full, just the way we like it.

Good morning Suzanne. Sounds like you are more organized than I am. I shop often and with an eye toward needs and sales as well.

I saw lots of folks at the grocery this weekend with their lists getting those needed items. I love to gaze over into their baskets to see what they will be eating. Nosey me.

I often say that FOOD is LOVE.  I'd rather grocery shop than go to the mall.  I use to be able to keep everything in my head, but now rely more on grocery lists.  I also shop the weekly specials, and meal plan accordingly.

My system is like what Kathy Streib said.  I keep a list and usually go once a week to store.  I always shop from a list, and know what I'm making for the next 4-7 meals when I shop.

I try to keep a list on my iphone and that helps. Otherwise the deep freeze is always well stocked and the garden has lots of things to choose from, so we never have to go hungry.

I'm not much of a systems kind of person.  I sort of just fly by the seat of my pants.  And obviously I get enough to eat. LOL  that being said lots of times I call Donald to pick up what I forgot on his way home.  Good thing he drives by  the store.

Suzanne, Thanks for your comment above and support. I think it's a little more involved and I can not even imagine trying to tackle a project like this.

Hi Suzanne,

Love your systems.. I have to admit our systems have changed. Geno does our grocery shopping and all is well now. He is not as active in our business but without his help of picking up the slack on the home front I could never keep our numbers where there are!! He is my rock and I count my blessings every day!

I don't know if you have Safeway in your area, but they have a great app that I use for my grocery list and finding the best deals in the store for what I want.  Good post, Suzanne.  Thank you!

Suzanne - the organized grocery list is an example I use when I talk about goals being written down.  I could not remember without an organized list.

Suzanne,, now this is what I call being organized!  It's too cold to go out tonight, so I'm heading down to open the fridge to do an inventory.

Hi, Suzanne...I do watch the sales and stock up. You reminded me that butter is on sale at one of the stores in Delta. If I get down there by Tuesday, I will have to stock up.

This is serious organization, Suzanne! I do most of my shopping on Thursdays as that's when I get my senior discount, take advantage of the weekly specials that were sent to my email on Wednesday when I also sort out my coupons for the Thursday trip. Fortunately, if I do run out of something it's no more than a 3 minute trip to the supermarket.
