We thought we had months but yesterday was the day . . .

We thought we had months but yesterday was the day . . .

It was two weeks ago that we were told our beloved Holly (pictured on the left) had terminal cancer that had spread to her lungs.

She was her joyful, bright, and energetic self until we noticed her breathing faster and took her to the veterinarian, and after a week of testing we were told the awful news.

We thought we might have months as perky as she still was and hoped and prayed for the best.

We were hopeful that the medication to help her breathe and shrink her tumor would give her the best quality of life for the time she had remaining with us but her breathing deepened and increased this past weekend.   Sharon and I took turns with her lying beside her and comforting her all through the night on Friday and Saturday nights.

Holly was our first family pet and she was still our baby as Sharon and I are now empty-nesters.

I didn't know for sure but I felt she wasn't going to last long Sunday afternoon as I had to go show three homes.  I sobbed uncontrollably in despair as I might not see her again as I  said my final good byes-just in case.  Maddie (pictured on the right in the top picture) could tell Holly was in deep trouble as she milled about aimlessly not knowing what to do, and she finally came over to comfort me and kiss me in my deep despair over Holly's demise.

There just wasn't time to cancel the showings as things changed so rapidly, even though my client would have been very understanding.  Holly died in Sharon's arms and our daughters arrived to add comfort. When I arrived back home I rocked her for over an hour and wept and thanked God for His mercy in taking her quickly and not having her suffer in lingering pain for months before we would have to make a terrible decision on ending her life.

How can someone experience such deep loss from the death of a pet dog?

Holly always greeted us with joyous excitement and always showed us unconditional love no matter what mood we were in, or how we responded to her loving and joyous barks when arriving home.

Holly was a good shepherd.  She always corrected Maddie on walks and cut her off if Maddie was going to cross the street to advance on other walkers or dogs.

 DOG is  GOD  spelled backwards!

If only more humans would display the unfailing love, need to always protect and shepherd, return love no matter how they are treated, this would be a much better place to live.

I was reminded every day of God's love for our family with seeing the love that Holly always gave us every day without exception.  I will miss you Holly and I will see you again.  I believe that!

 APPENDIX

Picture 1:  Holly(left) and Maddie(right) on rock wall about 3-4 years old.

This is my favorite picture of Holly and Maddie together!

Picture 2:  Holly was a Christmas 2003 gift for our youngest daughter Janelle who so desperately wanted a dog (against my wishes).  We went to the rescue shelter and asked if they had any  dachshunds and they did not.  They knew a breeder who was having a hard time getting rid of  a dachshund who was the runt of the litter after almost seven months of trying to sell her off.  Sharon took me in to look at Holly and there was no question she was going home with us for no telling what that breeder might do if he couldn't sell her after seven months.

Janelle would dress Holly up and in this case Holly had her own camping equipment complete with tent, sleeping bag and chair.

Picture 3Holly in Tee Shirt at the real estate office.  It was so cold in the Re/MAX office in Lafayette that Janelle would try and keep Holly warm when on occasion they would all go to Sharon's office to work after hours or on weekends.

Picture 4Holly is on the right in her Halloween HOT DOG  costume (age 6).  She always had a stately walk and erect carriage about her as she walked or stood!  Maddie (left) looks rather humiliated in her bumble bee costume.     ^_~

Nick, how awful for you that you had to put down your two Dalmations.  We are so grateful that Holly did not suffer a prolonged illness in pain.  Thanks for your comment!

HI Bruce - just read your response to my question and that is hard that your Holly was the alpha, and now your other one is probably feeling it. My sister just had the same with her two german shepherds, she lost one (very unexpectedly) and now the other one is adjusting without her leaders.

Hope you and your wife are doing better, and thinking of you both and Maddie too! Hugs.

Sharon, thanks so much for checking back in on us.  We are smothering Maddie in love, but we still miss Holly's excited and joyous bark as her greeting when we returned home.

That is so sad, Bruce. That is one of the reasons I would think twice about getting a dog. I can imagine losing them is unbearable.

Jane, if you had a dog as sweet as Holly you would never regret having such a loving companion.  It was the shock more than anything as we thought we would have her many more months.  I appreciate your comment, Jane!

Oh Bruce and Sharon, I'm so sorry for your loss. I know it won't be the same without Holly. You wrote a beautiful tribute that goes straight to the heart. I could picture the whole story enfold as I read every line.

This part is worth repeating and ever so touching and beautiful:

DOG is  GOD  spelled backwards!

If only more humans would display the unfailing love, need to always protect and shepherd, return love no matter how they are treated, this would be a much better place to live.

I'm sorry to hear of your family's loss of Holly, clearly a very loved pet.  Last time we lost a pet was just under a year ago and I still think about her daily and miss her dearly.  They bring such joy to our lives (which we try to reciprocate) that it's difficult to let them go.  These kinds of losses are things we eventually learn to accept but never really get over.

Bruce, there is NOTHING like the love of and FOR a dog. My oldest sister was a Boxer, given to my mom by my dad on their first wedding anniversary. I came along after that and had a GREAT big sister to teach me about how wonderful a dog can be. We lost her to cancer, too. My dad couldn't be there when the time came and it broke his heart, but we couldn't wait...she was in too much pain. 47 years later, I still remember the last time we had her in our lives so I can feel very very deeply for you. They are THE BEST.

I can only hope that you have made the step to get a companion for Maddie.

Now, excuse me, as I have to go get a tissue!

Bruce,  I had to lo-gin to AR and read this after we spoke.  Oh my goodness, reading this made me cry (again). I feel how painful it is to let go and say goodbye to a beloved pet. Yes, you and Holly will see each other again.

Indeed, "If only more humans would display the unfailing love,..."
the world would be a better place.
