Childhood Quirks Can Become Adult Gifts

By

As children, there are personality characteristics about ourselves that may cause embarrassment while growing up. Here are two of mine . As a kid, I was ridiculously friendly. Adults seemed to like that but my peers thought I was weird.

Another oddity about me was that I was the one kid in class who, when the teacher would ask, "Does anyone have a question?" I would raise my hand and say "I don't understand such and such...could you explain that again, please?" Sometimes there would be groans from the other students. But, I do recall a time in college, when one of my theatre professors who was quite intimidating said, "Does everyone understand?" and I raised my hand and basically said, that I needed a better definition so that I could grasp the concept. I KNEW that others didn't get it either, but it was important enough to me that I didn't care if I looked like an idiot in front of my classmates, because I wanted to truly understand. At that moment, another female student came to my rescue. She basically said to the class at large that no one got what he was talking about, but they were all too afraid to come out and say it, and that she appreciated me for taking that risk. I finally felt exonerated! Probably for the first time.

As to the ridiculously friendly me today, encountering all of the different types of clients that I serve, who come from a very wide range of lifestyles, histories and different countries, I can always find out something about them that creates a commonality with us and builds a foundation under a relationship that has made it much more fun to do real estate business with them! I ask lots of open-ended questions because I am really HONESTLY interested in getting to know them--what makes them tick! What their story is. And they can be seven or seventy. Engaging them in friendly conversation is that adult gift that made me weird as a kid, but I embrace it now.

What are those quirks about yourself that you've re-created into adult gifts? How have they benefited you as an adult? Maybe it's TIME to embrace them wholly as they make you that unique you that nobody else can come close to being!

As a kid I had no concept of shy.  I really thought the party didn't start until I showed up.  It has served me well as an adult because I can and will talk to anyone and be comfortable with it.

Gayle what adorable picture of you as a little girl! So sweet!  And I can see your bubbly personality and curiosty coming out....uncontained. Love it!  I grew up with an over the top friendly family where everyone we met (and we traveled a lot) was a friend. Finding the connection was the key...and there was always a connection of some kind.  Still that way today and wouldn't change it!

Gayle, what an adorable picture of you as a sweet little girl. As a Realtor® we have to first form a relationship, building a relationship requires us to truly know those we come in contact with. Even as a young child, learning about other cultures, religions, traditions fascinated me, still does!

Your personality, friendliness and open nature is a huge plus. I'm glad that didn't get squashed as you grew up. I always had a sense of adventure which hasn't left me.

Liz Wallace what a great self-confidence that exudes!

Anna Banana Kruchten-that was our family to a T! We would make friends with people sitting next to us at a restaurant--no one was a stranger. (I remember in the early years of my relationship with my quiet hubby he would be shrinking away as I would gravitate towards someone at the next table and engage them in conversation...he has since embraced it as well!) We moved a lot, so my sister and I were often the new kids in school and the neighborhood. Yes, finding the connection is/was definitely the key!

Patty Da Silva, Davie, Southwest Ranches Cooper City, Plantation, Weston, REALTOR I would think you are as well!

Beth Atalay what a WONDERFUL "quirk" to have....being curious about other religions, cultures and traditions. I would think that people in other countries are more used to a variety than we as Americans had been....certainy where I grew up, it was, but then it was always a small town, or outside a big city. How 'bout you?

Haha, I agree, asking too many questions as a kid can get annoying to others, but as an adult, it is a very important trait to have.  The more questions we ask, the more we learn, as a kid or an adult.

Oh, yes, you and I would be close and fast friends.....that is exactly the way I was as a kid, too.  I was very outgoing around adults, but somewhat intimidated by kids because they were often mean to me.  But, put me in any group and I will find a way to make friends with nearly anyone....thanks for the great post, Gayle.

Gayle, I think the sense of adventure I had as a child has enabled me to try out new ideas, new ways of working and out of ruts. While appreciating the past, I enjoy the present and look forward to the future.

I was very shy and was always thinking but afraid to say what I thought. Now I speak up and an often the only one in a meeting or committee that will. Then it gets others to contribute as well.

It is very wise of you to embrace your personality in the early age. Not everyone is lucky like that.

Thanks for sharing this.

I've written before about my love of organization and how I would prefer cleaning closets to playing outside when I was just a child....my little friends thought I was crazy!
