As children, there are personality characteristics about ourselves that may cause embarrassment while growing up. Here are two of mine . As a kid, I was ridiculously friendly. Adults seemed to like that but my peers thought I was weird.
Another oddity about me was that I was the one kid in class who, when the teacher would ask, "Does anyone have a question?" I would raise my hand and say "I don't understand such and such...could you explain that again, please?" Sometimes there would be groans from the other students. But, I do recall a time in college, when one of my theatre professors who was quite intimidating said, "Does everyone understand?" and I raised my hand and basically said, that I needed a better definition so that I could grasp the concept. I KNEW that others didn't get it either, but it was important enough to me that I didn't care if I looked like an idiot in front of my classmates, because I wanted to truly understand. At that moment, another female student came to my rescue. She basically said to the class at large that no one got what he was talking about, but they were all too afraid to come out and say it, and that she appreciated me for taking that risk. I finally felt exonerated! Probably for the first time.
As to the ridiculously friendly me today, encountering all of the different types of clients that I serve, who come from a very wide range of lifestyles, histories and different countries, I can always find out something about them that creates a commonality with us and builds a foundation under a relationship that has made it much more fun to do real estate business with them! I ask lots of open-ended questions because I am really HONESTLY interested in getting to know them--what makes them tick! What their story is. And they can be seven or seventy. Engaging them in friendly conversation is that adult gift that made me weird as a kid, but I embrace it now.
What are those quirks about yourself that you've re-created into adult gifts? How have they benefited you as an adult? Maybe it's TIME to embrace them wholly as they make you that unique you that nobody else can come close to being!
