We are expecting the coldest weater of the year in Dahlonega Georgia tonight. To make matters worse many people are withut power from the ice storm.

Important tips to keep your pipes from busing tonight.
If your house is without power you should cut the water off if you are on public water or turn the pump breaker off if you are on a well. You need to turn off the breaker for the hot water. Drain as much water as you can out of the pipes and open all faucets both hot and cold side to hopefully prevent your pipes from busting when they freeze.

If your power is on you should open the cabinet doors on any sink that is located on an outside wall. You should also let the water run just a little both hot and cold side.

Keep in mind if you are on a well the pump is not running so your water is off now. If you don't turn it off water will start running everywhere when the power comes back on if you have all the faucets open. You rin the risk of something oveflowing if you are away or asleep when the power comes back on.

Thank you for the post and the tips. I did not know that it is a good idea to keep the cabinet door over a sink  open.

Gita,

Not the door over the sink, under it. That will allow the heat to get into the cabinet  to help keeps the pipes warm that are inside the exterior wall.
