Skijoring; Flying Through the Snow with a Friend. skijouring

When I was young a lot of my friends spent a lot of time enjoying winter fun on their snowmobiles, but I was saving every dime for college so I invested in something a whole lot less expensive, a pair of cross country skis.

I bought the skis for transportation, to get around quickly on my trapline and for ice fishing and hunting, but I soon grew to love the thrill of flying across the fields and through the woods at tremendous speeds. And I took pride in being faster than all of my friends and family.

My love of this winter fun continued through college and then after graduation I moved on to New Mexico and then Southern Michigan where I got out of the habit of flying through the woods on narrow boards.

Since getting back to Wisconsin nearly 25 years ago I haven’t taken the time for much winter recreation and have only dug my skis out a few times, mostly for work.  But for Forestry work snowshoes are a whole lot more maneuverable so the skis have not had much use.

With all the snow that we have this year, I am thinking that maybe I should dust off my old skis and use them for walking the dog; I know that Jack would appreciate a little skijoring.

Bob, I am glad you were able to enjoy flying through the snow on those narrow boards. I was never one for those winter recreational sports, but I can tell you truly enjoyed them.

Bob I so agree it is like flying through the trees on skinny boards!  My favorite place to cross country ski was at Vail Pass when I lived there.  It was about 2 or 3 miles up and then 10 miles down the mountain to a little tiny town with a great Mexican Restaurant. Fun times!  Go for it this year - and take some pics!
