Extraordinary Gaithersburg:  Sherman Ealy

This announcement was published by the City of Gaithersburg, Maryland:

Sherman Ealy has been a crossing guard with the Montgomery County Police Department for 25 years. All but one of those years has seen him dutifully manning the crosswalks and streets in front of Gaithersburg Elementary School, ensuring safety for thousands of youngsters, many of whom are now grown and have children of their own. Sherman's attentive services have also helped students at St. Martin of Tours, Summit Hall, Brown Station, Ronald McNair and Dufief Elementary Schools. When asked what he likes most about his job, Sherman replied, "The children's smiles are what get me through my day." He will be recognized with a proclamation at an upcoming Mayor and City Council meeting.

We know there are many people doing extraordinary things in our community each and every day. Let us know about them by e-mailing cityhall@gaithersburgmd.gov. Use "Extraordinary Gaithersburg" in the subject line.

Roy,

Nice post.  I see people like Sherman at school crossings, whenever we are in and about town at school day's end.  You are right they should be acknowledged. A

I wish we had crossing guards here Roy. Each day I drop my son off for school I see cars making illegal left turns across the schools main crosswalk.

Hi @Roy,  There are so many people that have served their communities like Sherman Ealy  It's a shame that many of them get unnoticed and fall through the cracks.  Thanks for sharing his story.

Sherman Ealy is one of those citizens that make up the tapestry of our daily lives.  We don't consider their actions every day. Yet, when we take time to reflect on their involvement, we realize what a blessing they are!
