Several years ago, I listed a home in Glacier View Meadows. When I went to the listing appointment the man had a very hard time signing his name because the pain in his hand was so severe. I watched as his wife helped him by guiding and supporting his hand; it was agonizing to watch. Looking back, I wish we would have had him sign just one document- (a power of attorney), because there are many documents to sign in a real estate transaction, but that’s another story.
They told me he was going to have hand surgery in a few weeks- and he did. After the surgery he was prescribed pain medication, to help manage the pain.
Soon thereafter, there were 2 showings on their house on the same day. It’s always exciting when you have one showing- let alone two!!! The house was as neat as a pin and in show ready condition, the sellers left, and anxiously waited….but their excitement quickly disappeared when they called me in the late afternoon to say that his pain medication was missing! I was shocked, they were upset, and he was in pain.
They went through the normal “maybe it accidently fell into the trash can” when we were cleaning off the counter”… or maybe this, or maybe that; but they knew they put it away in the kitchen cabinet, where they always kept the medicine- AND IT WAS GONE.
I told them to call the Sheriff, and in hindsight I should have called the Sheriff to report it too. They called their doctor and told the office what had happened, but they couldn’t get a new prescription immediately because that medication “is a controlled substance”. So, the man was in great discomfort, while someone was getting stoned at his expense!
A recent article in Realtor magazine, reminded us that it happens more often than we might think, and it could be a number or different kinds of meds that might go missing, too!
Since then, I tell my sellers not only to lock up their firearms, jewelry, or any small thing of value, but also all of their medications. When you’re letting strangers into your home, some precautions are necessary.
It was lessoned learned, at great expense to my seller.
Having your home on the market can be a pain- but being in pain because some Crum stole your medication is totally avoidable.
