Snow And Ice Storm Hits Huntsville AL

Huntsville, Alabama was hit with a little snow and an ice storm on Friday that pretty much brought the city and most of Northern Alabama to a stand still. Streets in entire towns and counties were proclaimed impassable. In fact I didn't heed the warning and couldn't get out of the Village of Providence Friday night, the roads were terrible...cars couldn't climb very small inclines without tires spinning...cars going nowhere, except where you didn't want them to go like sliding sideways off the side of the road.

So, I made the best of it by working a little more at the office, then going to Grille 29 for dinner and booking a room at the Spring Hill Suites in Providence...all three places within walking or skating distance!

The photo below is outside of Grille 29. It doesn't look like much, but trust me...it was all a sheet of ice.

The Aftermath

When I got back to the office this morning this is what was left of our snow/ice storm that shut down Huntsville, Alabama!

Noah Seidenberg the ice was bad because you couldn't go anywhere, the real problem is that Huntsville really doesn't salt the roads and that we have a lot of little hills and winding roads here, of course, most of the major employers in the area decided to let everyone out of work at the same time so all the cars made traveling even worse. We only had a dusting of snow, but ice is ice no matter where you live. We are supposed to get more ice on Monday.

Good morning Nick,

Smart man to take precautions and don't try to get out there with the crazy drivers. We don't salt the roads either and ice cripples us the few times we are subjected to it!

Good Morning Nick: You have to look at the brighter side of almost everything. Even with the unexpected snow. That restaurant exudes lovely ambience despite the snow flakes blanketing the ground.

Hi Nick, That ice was so dangerous. I hope you are out of the woods now and back to a normal routine. I slid off the road and had to have to nice men push me back on. I felt out of control.

Dorie Dillard I did try to leave, but knowing that cars wouldn't be able to make it up small hills...I would be stuck in traffic all night if I every made it home at all. There's a very steep hill to my house and that would have been a no go. The only other way to my house would have been miles out of my way with no guarantee.

Maria Gilda Racelis yes, it was pretty and snow I can deal with, but ice is another story.

Debbie Reynolds we are under another ice watch this morning, but nothing like last week. We all depend on the kindness of strangers at some time...lucky for you there were two close at hand when you needed them.

We have another very icy morning in Maryland. Be careful if you must be out and about in the ice and snow.

Nick, with Alabama not prepared (nor the residents), sounds like your weather was a disaster.   Funny to see just one small pile of snow left....

I imagine that most of your winter driving skills have been forgotten....but you have to worry about what the "other guy" is going to do, too.  Wise choice in getting a room and calling it a day, Nick.

Just to be clear Ron Marshall, I have not lost any of my winter driving skills :) I do, however, worry about the other guy.

Joan Cox , temps are expected to be back into the mid to upper 50's next week. By the way everything is closed down again today because we are expecting 3"-6" of snow!

Nick, it's obvious you remember the ice driving all too well from your previous life in Illinois.  Great idea to be safe!!!  Glad it's back to normal and you're safe.

Nick, at least it didn't last too long!  Ice and snow in the South is not a good thing, people are not used to it and cities and towns don't have the resources to deal with it neither.

Those "snow"pictures of ice always look very pretty, but no question that they are dangerous conditions in places like the south. We, fortunately, dodged a huge bullet here in south Charlotte yesterday, but parts of town further north were hit quite badly--it was almost like two separate cities in terms of snow/ice conditions.

Snow doesn't last long here which is probably a good thing since Huntsville pretty much shuts down. I actually do miss snow, but Tom Braatz Waukesha County Real Estate 262-377-1459 you'll need to keep all that white stuff in cheesehead country.
