That's creepy

One of the last things I want my customers to ever say to me is, “That was creepy.”  But, it happened last weekend.

In preparation of a new listing, I like my clients to view the competition to really get a good feel for showing and pricing.   After all, the hard numbers don’t always tell the whole picture.

Last weekend, I set up 4 showings of the exact model as the home we’re listing this week.  As we were running early, I contacted the fourth homeowner, asked if we could come a little earlier and she asked for 15 minutes to have time to remove the dog.  No problem.

Upon arrival at the home, the door was open.  After ringing the doorbell, we entered.  The home showed very well - lights were on, home was clean and neat.  There were modest upgrades to the flooring and baths.

As we were talking before getting into our cars, I received a text:  You didn’t even pick up a feature sheet.

Huh?  The homeowner was sitting in a car at the end of the cul-de-sac staring at us and had sent me a text to tell me I hadn’t picked up a sheet.  HUH?

    My client’s response, “That’s CREEPY.”

I understand it’s your home and you want to make sure it’s taken care of, but it was creepy to have this homeowner sit in her car staring at us.  If you have pets to remove for showings, go for a long walk or drive over to the park about 1 block away.  Please don’t creep us out.

What was really creepy is she noted you did not take a flyer and actually mentioned it.  Often my clients have the MLS print out I have given them and do not bother with a flyer.

Michael #49.  I was very clear when I arranged the showing what the purpose was.

Hello Juli. I get creeped out when the video/surveillance cameras are obvious, but I do understand why sellers are using them. However, I also agree with a couple of the comments above about letting the sellers know you are previewing the house, not bringing a serious buyer. If I were selling my home, I would not want other agents scouting it out for a future competitor. When appointments are made through the CSS showing service, there is an option to select that says you are previewing the home. It's not complete disclosure, but at least it does let the seller know you aren't bringing clients. The seller can then decide whether or not to accept the appointment. Very interesting post! You have sparked a lot of discussion!

Sellers have a negative impact on the process when they lurk.  If your buyer had been interested in this house, they may have thought that the seller was too creepy to make an offer.  I recently showed a property and it required that the owner and the owner's agent be present!  That is lurking double time!

It's a little creepy, I probably wouldn't have said anything.  You know pretend to be a fly on the wall.  You don't get to comment if you "weren't" there.  I probably would have just gone for a drive with Fido.

I really don't think it is creepy for them to park down the street because many people, especially ones with pets with them, want to go back into their homes as soon as you and your clients leave.  No need for them to drive around wasting gas!  I am puzzzled about the feature sheet though.  Always a good idea to advise your clients to be discreet about voicing their thoughts while in the house.

What was creepy was the call, not the fact that she sat at the end of the cul-de-sac. I would think most agents reaally don't need the feature sheet since they have the full MLS listing, which has far more information, when they are showing homes...at least I do.

You also need to keep in mind someone could be watching and recording you on a web cam while you are showing their house. They are so inexpensive now and so small you will never know you are being watched and by who.

I recall a story a while back about homeowners who recorded their real estate agent going through the wife's underware drawer. Now THAT would creep me out... and I'd fire that guy in an instant!

I do agree that was creepy... however tons of owners currently have cameras on watching every move and hearing every word while the home is being shown...

In fact we have cameras in our home... folks may think that's creepy but we like knowing what's going on in our home when we're not in it...  and we do give our agents a heads up on the home camera issue today and we tell them to share that info with their clients... better safe than sorry...

Creepy indeed. I am more and more aware that I might be on camera.... and I do tell buyers that.

Creepy.... yikes.

I didn't have time to read every comment, but know that some owners have Nanny-cams or Home Security Systems in place and can watch AND listen to you. Caution your Client about saying too much....

That is creepy. I always look for the dog walker who is staring. LOL.   And the nanny cams I'm keeping a better eye out for them.
