What Did He See Out The "Rear Window"?--Be The Star of Your Own Movie

One of my all time favorite movies is Rear Window starring James Stewart and Grace Kelly. In this suspense filled thriller directed by Alfred Hitchcock, Stewart plays a newspaper photographer who, while recuperating at home with a broken leg, becomes obsessed with what he sees out his rear window. With the help of the beautiful Grace Kelly, he tries to determine if what he suspects, is true--that a murder has been committed.

How many times as REALTORS® have we looked out the rear window of a home, only to be amazed--and sometimes frightened--by what we see?

In my real estate version of Rear Window, I play the James Stewart role as the ruggedly handsome voyeuristic photographer, thankfully without the broken leg! My wife Tammie assumes the beautiful Grace Kelly role. (Really, who else could I pick?) As the story unfolds, we are showing our client a house...

Upon entering the high end home, we marveled at the exquisite decorating. The colors were perfect, the light fixtures gorgeous. The chef's kitchen had all the bells and whistles. Off the kitchen was an extremely large eat-in space, beautifully laid out with "Pottery Barn" place settings and a large bouquet of live flowers. As we walked through the kitchen we could see that adjacent to the eat-in area was another room--I would call it a Florida room, again, beautifully decorated. It had enormous windows facing the back of the property.

As we gazed out the rear windows of this home, an amazing (and yes, frightening) sight came into focus. At first I could not believe my eyes. My stomach turned over as I considered what this meant.

About 75 feet behind the house, rising out of the ground and stretching to a height that appeared at first to disappear in the clouds, was an extremely large electrical transmission tower. Resembling the famous "Burning Man" it had been hidden by the roofline of the house.

Our client looked at his wife, and then settled his eyes upon us. He shook his head, almost imperceptibly, and we knew this house was not the one.

In this true story, what we saw out the Rear Window, wasn't murder, but it certainly killed our deal.

Hello Tom ... great pick for the contest and around 30 years ago I use to have around 17 Alfred Hitchcock movies. And if I am not mistaken, Mr Hitchcock made 34 films ;o)

Oh my that is a deal killer and when I see them I wonder who do these towers not bother. Evidently there is a buyer out there that doesn't care. I can tell you I have to have a view out the rear window. Very nice entry Tom.

Amanda--Thanks, I'll bet that was fun!

Debbie--There are so many terrific Hitchcock movies, I enjoy most of them!

Roger--Thanks for another fun contest.

Chris Ann--Chuckle...

Silvia--Thanks, and oh well, just move on!

Ed--No kidding. The house was on a hill--the wires were visible but not the tower.

Sharon--Hitchcock has a way of making normal things frightening. Think Birds...and electrical towers!

Evelyn--Thanks!

VB--There's hardly a Hitchcock movie I don't enjoy. A case of mistaken identity turns into North By Northwest. How cool is that!

Joe--This is one contest I look forward to every year. Reading the entries is a real kick!

Raymond--Thanks

Debbie--Like every other community, I guess. Views are very important to most buyers and electrical towers or a storage building are definite turn-offs!

Tom, This is a FUN read on a horror scale of course! Monstrous power lines can be a killer but a low, low price can make people 'over' look them.

This was a great and applicable post. We have some areas in Gilbert where very very large electrical lines run right behind and in some cases right over the backyards of some neighborhoods. Strangely enough some people don't mind it at all.

The Rear Window was a terrific movie and you drew a wonderful analogy with real estate. Those towers can really be the kiss of death, and I suspect many agents try to minimize them in their photos - I have yet to have a buyer willing to purchase a home when they look out the window and see the power lines in close proximity, and worse the huge towers we see in a numbers of areas here

Good luck in the contest!

Jeff

Ha, those can sure kill a sale. Rear Window, and front window views don't have to be stunning, but they can't offer a quirky view either. Perceptions of health issues are "killers."

Tom, wow do you bring back memories! Raymond Burr was such a bad guy....and Hitchcock, in my opinion can't be beat for weaving a tale of mystery and suspense that gives you the heebie geebies afterwards!

Those rear window transformers are enough to make anyone run for cover! Glad I didn't miss your entry--wonderful choice and I loved how you talked about your "own" Grace Kelly.

Hello Tom ... what a great movie you decided to use for your post. VB is a Alfred Hitchcock fan and at one time had 17 of his movies 30 years ago. If I am not mistaken I think Hitchcock made 27 or 37 movies in his lifetime ;o)
