Summit is a city in Union County, New Jersey. Summit was originally incorporated as Summit Township in 1869, it was reincorporated as a city in 1899.

Summit is a major transportation hub with 30-minute direct access to Manhattan, major highways and the Newark Airport. There is direct service from Summit to New York's Penn Station in Midtown Manhattan. NJ transit also offers bus service to and from Newark. Route 24 and Interstate I 78 run through the city, offering access to many NJ, NY and PA destinations.

Summit Public Schools serve students in pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade. The city is home to many well known private schools like Kent Place, Oak Knoll and Oratory Prep.

A highlight of the area is Summit’s downtown, where sidewalk cafes, boutiques, and restaurants are joined by spas, art galleries and magnificent turn-of-the-century homes.

Home buyers like Summit real estate because of big houses, good schools and New Jersey Transit rail link to Manhattan's financial district. Summit is mainly a residential suburban community, with a policy of zoning ordinances requiring a single-family house on large lots, a requirement that effectively excluded apartment buildings and multi-family dwellings. Real Estate in Summit features a variety of offerings, larger Colonials with charming front porches, restored bungalows, penthouse condominiums, and a mix of mid-century homes in Cape Cod, ranch and split-level styles. And at the top of the market, home buyers will find stately brick mansions, vintage Victorians and newly constructed luxury homes for sale.

The security organization Safewise ranked Summit #44 among the 50 safest cities in New Jersey (2014).

I lived in Summit back in the late 70's when I taught at Summit High. My first apartment there was on the main street, above Scotty's Records. I wonder if that record shop is still there? Then I moved to a garden apartment near the train station, still in Summit, but near Berkley Heights, I think.
