The Long Wait Is Over

Trader Joe's is finally here.

Trader Joe's Fort Collins

The Fort Collins store opened on Friday, 2/27/15, and I dropped in to check it out bright and early yesterday morning. The thing is, I'm not allowed to be in even our local Kroger affiliate without adult supervision - I seem to have a weakness for what have been described as impulse purchases. So me in Trader Joe's - an emporium dedicated to the impulse purchase - is a recipe for trouble. I didn't disappoint, but within the 5 bags of goodies that constituted my haul, I was able to mollify Mary with several items that will come in handy on those nights where the dreaded "What do you want to do about dinner?" question comes up at 7:15pm. The rest of the stuff? Essentials and necessities, mostly of the cheese and chocolate variety.

No wines, though. Colorado has a very strong independent liquor store lobby, and hence a quaint law that prohibits grocery stores from selling wine & beer (except for 3.2 beer, which apparently some people actually drink!). There's a provision that allows a multi-store operation to sell wine & beer in one store, and Boulder got that, as Trader Joe's began recently expanding to our state. So we have a smaller, more limited edition Trader Joe's. It will be interesting to see if this makes a difference, but right now, the novelty of the store is keeping it packed.

Trader Joe's does bring Fort Collins' shopping options almost up to speed - with Whole Foods & Sprouts, as well as the big guys and a large selection of specialty shops of all kinds, about the only thing we're lacking is a really great bakery. Meanwhile, I'm looking forward to my next visit - I'm sure I missed a lot of good stuff the first time.

I used to shop in what I believe is the first ever Trader Joe's in South Pasadena, back in the 1970s.  When I moved to the Chicago area, there were none here and it took a good 10 years to finally get one (and now there are many.)

You will be drawn back many times - we all have our little favorite things that only they sell.

The Trader Joe's closest to me is very small compared to that humongous store.

Dick, I travel to the closest Trader Joe's to me which is 35 miles and so worth it. Small things that make us happy!

Dick, We really like Trader Joe's but it's about a 25 mile one way trip to them, and between my showing houses most weekends and Liz's cat volunteer work taking up most of her Saturday and Sunday afternoons, we rarely make a trip there.  Porbably better for our budget that we don't, but there are definitely some great choices there that help with those nights like you mention, "What are we doing for dinner?".  Bill

Dick, you have one more option to get your groceries!  We don't have a Trader Joe's in our area but one can always hope!

Dick we do not have a Trader Joe's, but we do have a couple of grocery stores that Mary would have to absolutely keep you out of.  My wife makes sure I don't go anywhere near them and I am no where as bad as you :)

I wish we had one here in Clarksville. I think they think we are too blue collar to support a store like that. I wonder. Enjoy yours.

Great news Dick. There are some items at Trader Joes that we really love. Their frozen section has some really easy to prepare and good tasting items such as their rice in a pouch product. Trader Joes is one of the better chains out there.

I'm jealous. We don't even have rumors of a Trader Joes coming to within an hour of me.

Such a great store.  There is one about 30 minutes from me.....haven't been in a while, but shopped there all the time when I lived about 10 minutes away.

Dick, congrats, love it. Much to Diane's chagrin TJ's is less than two miles from our house:)) She gives me a budget that I can spend.....on  a side note love it she comes home around 7:15-7:30 pm depending on traffic and it is the same questions "what are you going to make for dinner"

Dick - we have one too.  It is an awesome store.  It is funny how wine, liquor, and beer laws vary by state.  There are so many different examples.

We have many Trader Joe's stores in my area. They are always very crowded with shoppers. I love how helpful their staff is if you are lost in variety of products.

I'm sure the Trader Joes in Fort Collins Colorado will be a hit with the public.  We find good deals on outstanding wines there.  Maybe the law will be changed and you too will enjoy the many spirits they offer.
