Health Concerns About Laminate Flooring Installed in Homes

It hasn’t been so many years ago that the specter of Chinese Drywall began to materialize and create some major issues for homeowners.  It was the toxicity of the drywall products that posed major health concerns.

Tonight while watching a segment on CBS’s “60 Minutes,” a new concern has arrived.  It’s with another Chinese product that is being sold here in America, by Lumber Liquidators, one of this country’s foremost laminate flooring companies.  The issue is formaldehyde levels found in the product.  In some instances the levels were 20 times California standards.  And, it was enough to have the lab wonder if their testing equipment was operating properly. Apparently, the flooring is in hundreds of thousands of homes across America, but especially prevalent in California.

For those interested in the “60 Minutes” segment, but missed it, you can access via: “Lumber Liquidators Lined to Health and Safety Violations.”

I was especially astonished to see workers manufacturing the product for Lumber Liquidators clearly state the product was not what they were labeling it, in order to meet California standards.

Hi Myrl, I saw this segment also - they (the Chinese workers)  freely admitted that the label didn't meet the standard! I don't think this is the end of the story for all the home owners who have this already installed in their homes...

Hi Myrl, I hope you are having a good week. Your post opened my eyes and confirmed a suspicion I have had about most products made in China!

Myrl,

I have to agree with Robert (Bob) Gilbert but my dislike of China product happened years ago long story...if I have a choice I usually do not buy it but many times we do not have a choice!

If the flooring is like the Chinese drywall . . . . it may only be a issue in high humidity area's of the country . . . . we really need more information on the flooring.

Good luck and success.

Hi Myrl, The wood that is used for paneling in manufactured housing is also heavy into the formaldehyde preservative as well. Carpet manufacturing also uses a lot of it. The stuff is deadly and I am shocked that there is so much of this around. It is a sort of green product though. Not the right green however. If you get too much of it, you do turn green.

William Johnson - I am convinced we need a push to bring the manufacturing of these products back home.  Having them created in parts of the world, that aren't as concerned about health issues as we are is critical!

Some people try to save on everything, but not every time you must go for cheaper. These floors and walls can poison your family!

Myrl,

I feel suspect of most products made in China.  Not long ago there was the pet food chicken stuff that was made in China, then the baby toys, ad nauseum.  I make it a point to look at where clothing and shoes are made.  I had a favorite brand of shoes whose tag line was "made in the mountains of Italy."

Recently I bought a pair that started falling apart two days later, and I took them back, and they were made in China...That brand lost its well earned credibility with me, I still have a few pairs that I bought before they started to manufacture in China, and they are in great shape.  A

Ron & Alexandra Seigel - It had to of been disappointing to lose your favorite brand of shoes because it was decided to select profit over the ability to create a quality product.  I'm seeing the cheap Chinese stuff infiltrate even what were once considered our better stores.  Hopefully, consumers will begin to exercise their power and help bring manufacturing back home.

Myrl, I am curious has there been any more news about this issue with laminate flooring from China?

Bob "RealMan" Timm - The latest news I had heard was the Lumber Liquidators has denied creating an unsafe product.  Of course, what else are they going to say in a litigeous environment.  I still remember the chuckle and the face of the guy working at the Chinese factory making the product, when asked if the laminate was CARB2 compliant.  And, his response that it would be far more expensive to make it compliant.  And, there it was stamped with "CARB2" firmly in place.  Like Alexandra said, they have lost their credibility.

William Johnson - As I mentioned several days ago, I had just paneled a bedroom wall with bead paneling.  I was a little concerned because of the comment you made about wall paneling sometimes having formaldahyde.  I checked the product label once again.  I bought natural wood, without any finish treatment.  I painted the boards myself, once it was installed.  The product fortunately, comes from Canada!  Thanks for alerting me though!

Yes, this is indeed an issue right now and with all of the flips out there, nobody can be certain what they have.

Myrl,

I just came back to read more of the comments. I think the best thing to do is avaoid anything for your home made in China and maybe that should include anything made in China..
