During the Winter Months, Do Not Forget to Feed the Birds

During the Winter Months, Do Not Forget to Feed the Birds

I live in Southern California but even here, the food for birds becomes scarce during the cold winter months. I try to feed the backyard birds and also the hummingbirds who stay for the winter. Last winter, 2013-2014, when there was only about 10 homeowners in my neighborhood so we did not have many birds but this year we have over 50 homeowners and many birds stuck around for the winter.

I have some bird photos here from the Cornell Bird of Ornithology site.

If  you have never visited this site, you should see what it has to offer if you are interested in birds.

It has live cams of the bird nests (6) different times of the year and it is a great reference site to identify or learn more about a species.

Remember, do not forget to feed the birds in your area during the winter months.

Also, placement of bird feeders is very important as predator birds are hungry too so make sure to shield it from the open spaces...from those hawk or eagle eyes. We have hawks and twice I have seen them in my yard. Once they got a pigeon off the roof and another time they got a mourning dove.

Hi Kristin Hamilton CA Realtor even though we pretty much only have sparrows in the winter I do enjoy feeding them. It's cheap and I appreciate their keeping the mosquitoes down in the summer.

Excellent reminder Kristin Hamilton CA Realtor. We have several families of birds on our property, the most favorite being the bluebirds, and the least, the hawks.  We've needed to fill the bluebird feeders with mealworms about every five days this winter.  It's hysterical to watch the starlings attempt to get in the feeder, while Bluebirds perch on the fence and laugh.

Hi Bob "RealMan" Timm

I am sure you can relate to these snowy pictures too. I love my backyard birds and try to keep them from starving. I am so glad you feed your sparows in the snowy weather.

Hi Bette Gottwald

I love the way they interact with each other. One of my listings had a mother Blue-jay and she was always squawking at me and the other birds who would land in the yard. I brought her some sunflower seeds everytime I would go to the property. She would run out and grab them and they take them inside the hedge. Then she would come back out and squawk at me some more. Some times you cannot win!

Hi David Shamansky

Happy birds make happy homeowners usually except my husband hates the pigeons and we put up plastic barriers and chicken wire to keep them off the roof and insted the tile roof holes.
