Retirement in a Foreign Land, Nicks Truck
It’s been a tough month for vehicles, and a month when we need them working in top shape.
The cold temperatures have been rather hard on the equipment, a challenge to keep the batteries charged in the electronic equipment as well as a tough time keeping the trucks from freezing up.
Though Nick did take his old truck in for a bit of servicing before leaving Stevens Point, it still was not up to the rigors of a frigid Northern Minnesota Winter.
Last week on a very cold morning it decided it was time for a retirement, and with the pressures of a high paced project going on I agreed to let it retire.
So Saturday we ventured down to Superior, nearly a 200 mile drive to find a newer Toyota 4 runner.
Though we spent a steep price for the vehicle of 12 grand, it had problems long before we made it back to camp. The heat went out less than 100 miles from Superior.
Calls to the dealership where the salesman spoke so highly of how they “stand behind our vehicles”, were met with a different tone, now it is “that truck was sold, ‘as is’ “.
Good thing I hung around on the project a lot longer than I had planned, this allowed Jack and I to go off to a different dealer to get repairs done while Nick continues to work in the woods on the project.
After a frigid drive down to Bemidji yesterday, and a stay in a hotel last night, hopefully the truck will be working properly this afternoon. And Nick will have a safe and reliable truck to get him to the remote places that he needs to get to before the spring thaw.
The folks at the Toyota dealership in Bemidji were wonderful and went out of their way to help; I highly recommend them if you are ever in the area. As for the dealer in Superior, well I probably will not be recommending them.
