Safety is in the details

Safety is always important in the home, especially with little people around.  There are so many hazards for those young ones to find their way into that it's a wonder we can make it through to adulthood!

I see a lot of great things parents do to keep their infants and toddlers safe.  Drawer and cabinet locks are great, stair guards work well, and outlet covers that keep little fingers out of the outlets are essential.

But, sometimes we keep the obvious safe while not considering some of the more hidden places.  Something that I have seen a lot recently on inspections is a situation like this:

A house has drawer locks, cabinet locks, and outlet safety covers in place in all the visible areas.  Then I go into baby's bedroom and find that the outlet that is right behind the baby crib doesn't have any safety covers!  There is the cloth or vinyl pad around the crib that conceals the outlet, but babies move that pad around easily and then voila- there is an outlet right in their reach from bed!

Please remember to pay attention to the details.  Babies and toddlers will find all those places close to their eye level that we don't always see from our height.  Safety is in the details!  Keep everyone safe!

Something else that is great is the baby proof locks on doors they can reach and turn.  These are especially good for closets that may have things toddlers can choke on or for those that keep a weapon of any kind in the closet.  Stay safe!
