Did you know that Tustin, California is also known as the “City of Trees”?

Spanish Explorers first set foot in the Tustin area back in 1769 during the well-known Portola Expedition and they eventually settled here thanks to the beauty of the region which included majestic sycamore trees .

Through The Years

Besides the natural beauty of the area explorers also found Tustin ideal thanks to the availability of fresh water and great land which made Tustin ideal for developing farms.

Although there were Native Americans already living in the Tustin area when Spanish explorers arrived, the Spanish explorers grouped most of the inhabitants who were living here at the time by mission district and they were instrumental in turning the once nomadic Indians into fishermen, farmers and also harvesters.

Columbus Tustin

After many years of being used as farm or ranch land, Columbus Tustin and Nelson Stafford, both Northern California businessmen, bought close to 1,500 acres of ranch land in the area in the early 1870’s.

Columbus Tustin had a goal of turning his land into a housing development but by the mid 1870’s he ended up giving away most of it to anyone who agreed they would build homes on the land they purchased.

By 1883 Columbus Tustin died but left a town named after him which included three churches, a bank, hotel and plenty of ranches in the area.
