Wordless Wednesday (Almost)--Vintage School Transformed

Last spring I drove past an old elementary school I attended in 2nd and 3rd grade. It is located in the Dayton's Bluff neighborhood of St. Paul's east side.  We lived kitty-corner from Mounds Park Elementary in a duplex that no longer exists due to freeway expansion. Yet this historic school house stands. It is one of the oldest educational building in the city and has been transformed years ago into affordable rental housing. The beauty of the old red brick school house brings back memories of our principal, Mrs. Winter, who monitored the lunchroom to make sure we at our beets or Lima beans before we had seconds on pizza.

Hi Teri Eckholm I love old schools.... we still have one that I went to in our town....others have been converted to either condos or more town office space....I love to think about those good old days...

Hey Teri Eckholm my old elementary school was made into housing. I saw it years ago and was thrilled it has a new life. I'm with Barbara Todaro , I love the old schools and love it when they are converted.

There issomething about older schools that have a patina about them, that we don't see in more modern construction.  Here in Sacramento, our older schools had a design similar to the one pictured.  The kids walked inside, and there were any corridors open to the elements.  Our newer schools are often built with classroom doors to the outside.  I think this makes them so much more vulnerable.

I think my old elementary school is still around, however, I am not sure how it may have been repurposed.

Barbara--This was a surprise to me but I am glad it wasn't destroyed. I'd love to see the inside too.

Andrea--I too think it is an excellent repurpose of an old structure....gives new life while maintaining history in the neighborhood.

Myrl--In Minnesota all of our schools remain contained but many have a prison-like architecture now. There is little character to all brick flat construction of today.

Patricia--That is what I envisioned too...luxury. But the neighborhood dictated the repurpose to affordable apartments for lower income residents.

Joan--I was surprised that is was residential when I stopped by...I just had to look it up and see if it was condos for sale or rentals.
