Formerly known as Wake Island (pre-1970s), Herb Field and son Tim created a development plan that was meant to protect the bay views of the originally named Condo Project, the Buccaneer (now the Harbour Villa Club) to the south. He was very influential in overall development of the town itself during incorporation and condo community construction. He served on the Sarasota County Board of Education and was part of the creation of the Sarasota County Technical Institute. Herb’s son Tim did a tremendous amount of work to get Hideaway Bay started, putting in six years of dedicated effort navigating government and environmental requirements, finally selling the first unit in 1980.
