Is that a bird in your hair?

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Cornerstone Business Group Inc 0225086119

I once had a college professor who used to say, "You can't keep birds from flying around your head, but you can keep them from building a nest in your hair."  I know, that's really deep, but hang with me for a minute.

What was his point?  You don't have to take in or accept every piece of information that comes to you.  With the real estate business, there are more opportunities to create success presented to your average Realtor than he/she could accept in a lifetime, and that's just each month.  Think about the number of webinar invitiations you receive.  I could easily do two to three a day.  The invitations fill up my email accounts everyday.

Then, there are the invitations to join this SEO super service and that elite website building service.  You are invited to advertise on ZTR and a dozen other sites, and you are encouragted to sign up for a monthly postcard auto-mail campaign from XYZ service.  No fuss, no hassle, no . . .

You're introduced to agent A who made a six figure income in six months by doing these six things.  Agent B has 10 steps to greatness for ten bucks, and Agent C has debunked the myth of the six figure income in six months by doing these six things, but Agent D has gone one better.  He only has three things to do in three months to earn a three month vacation every six months.  It can be mindboggling.

One route to success in your chosen profession is to watch the pros in your area.  Watch what they do and determine if their techniques fit in with your personality.  Talk to other real estate professionals on forums like Active Rain, and see if their success can be translated into your community.  Not everything works in every community.  Once you're convinced of what will work for you, begin with small steps and experiment.  Then, as you see success evolving, leverage your time and money in areas where your efforts are showing positive results.

Let the webinars, advertising emails, phone calls and all of the other stuff just be white noise in your life.  Pick and choose which tools and techniques you think you can work with, and go to work.  You might find that none of the high octane tools of the day are for you.  You might love cold calling, knocking on doors or something else.  The key to your success in YOUR business is to do what WORKS for you.  Don't let the birds build a nest in your hair.

Hi Mike - That's good advice and a good program for building success a step at a time - the way it really happens.

Mike, your email inbox sounds a lot like mine, it is a challenge to keep the birds from nesting, but I keep moving fast enough to keep them from landing for long.

Mike, I agree with you. Behind all of those e-mails are people that are trying to make that 6 figure income too!

There are all manner of opportunities around us and the one that works the best is never a certainty.   Having the mindset to be able to develop and implement a working plan will give that person the reward they seek

80+ emails is what my email box gets daily... Most of those are requesting some of my commissions for their awe inspiring ways to get richer. How about I don't spend it on AY and Z?

Dick, I hate seeing the newbies getting swallowed up by these pitchmen. Of course, I've seen some seasoned agents get snagged too.

Bob, these folks are now using recorded messages. It's easier to hang up on them. 8-)

You bet, Kerry, and they want you to be one of their supporters.

Thanks, Will. All is well.

Yes it is, Myrl.

Well said, Ed.

Smart lady, Sussie.

Great post Mike as its 100% accurate! Not everyones success story will work for another. You have to buy in and be a believer as well as have it fit who you are! Nothing worse than the "fake" trying to be something that is truly not them

You nailed this one.  My email doubles constantly.  It seems like the more I unsubscribe to the more I receive.  Like the grey hair I pulled out once.

Good morning Mike. I look forward to your posts and your straight-forward approach to everything. This is terrific and I love the birds nest expression.

You're right, David. This is not a business where fake it till you make works. It gets expensive that way.

Mine too, Evelyn. Now the robo calls are flooding in.

James, that was a great idea to cut your hair off. No worries about birds there.

Thank you, Sheila. I have to be straight-forward. I'm not smart enough to be complicated.  Have a great day.

Mike, With the two job life, I have no choice but to be very selective in who gets my "extra" time.  And interestingly, I have the movie Birdman on reserve at Redbox tonight :)

I bet you do, Bliz. Even with one job it's a challenge to juggle everything. I need to watch that.

Well this certainly struck a chord with some folks! Ironically I was thinking about this very topic the other day and thinking about a post (not the bird part). You did it so much better than I would have.

We get bombarded constantly with learning opportunities (or at least ways that others make money off of us), especially now that the economy and market have inproved. The calls have increased as well. I just say NO unless it's something that I truly feel will benefit me

Jeff
