What are Tide Pools?

Industry Observer with Retired

Tide Pools

Tide pools are actually rock depressions filled with seawater when the tide goes out. The reason tide pools are fun to investigate , especially for children is that they can be filled with sea life left behind by the tide. There are also small sea creatures that can endure the extreme temperature changes from the sun that heats the shallow pools formed in the rocks.

When ever I am over on the cliffs of our shore line, I make my way down to sea level and look through the thousands of little tide polls and see what the sea has delivered. You have to get down real close and study the water and soon you will discover the many little sea animals and plant life that will fascinate you.

Here is a photo from a recent outing and you can see clearly all the tide pools as they are formed in the rock ledge that gets completely covered with water at high tide. That is when to go looking to find your own little miracles of the sea.

In another area, the tide pools can look like this photo below. This sea bird was actually drinking sea water and getting his vitamins and nutrients at the same time with the small sealife washed into the tide pools.

I love visiting the local tide pools, always fun to navigate through and check out the sea life, you never know what you'll see - last time I spotted an octopus among the usual suspects of fish, anemones, and hermit crabs.

That's an excellent definition of what a tide pool is!  I've never heard it described in such a way.  I've always found a fascination with our coastal tidal pools, and can spend hours just exploring those nooks and crannies for whatever the sea provides there!

Your photos are drop dead gorgeous as always, William!

Good morning William. The tidepools out on the Pacific coast are little different than the ones here on the east. Nevertheless, they are fun to watch when the wildlife congregates around them.

Exploring tide pools is always a fun adventure with kids. Some love having the hermit crabs scamble across their palms; other find it scary. Same thing with seaweed.

Wiliam, when I lived on the east coast of Florida I would go to Bathtub Beach at low tide to visit the tide pools! Enjoy your day!

Love your photos, and I love looking at tide pools.  They are time when the tide is so low that all kinds of creatures are revealed that are not usually seen.  A

William, This reminds me of a field trip I went on with my son's class when he was in like 5th or 6th grade. The one thing that was stressed to the kids is to look but do not touch. We need to observe but not play with what we find in the tide pools. Great photos ... as always.

We have some wonderful areas to enjoy the tidal pools and all the sea and bird life that share them. That seagull is certainly enoying it

The shores of Maine were especially fun to explore back east because of all the rocky shores - lots of small crabs, fish and sometimes star fish. It was a blast for our kids..and us big kids too

We have a beach house in Massachusetts, along the beach there are many such pools. They are used constantly after a rain.

Make it a great week!

Your photos are excellent. The focus, the details, everything makes me so jealous, but you really became very good at that.
