The Corolla beaches are among the widest and most beautiful on the eastern seaboard of North Carolina, and the homes for sale in Corolla are some of the most luxurious and expensive on all the Outer Banks.

Before we begin exploring all that Corolla has to offer, let’s tackle the correct pronunciation first:  the locals pronounce it “Cor-RAH-lah”. The other pronunciation refers to the car.

Corolla is a perfect blend of old and new: New, in that it is the most recently developed section of the Outer Banks, and thus, the architecture and construction of a great many Corolla real estate listings are cutting edge and luxurious beyond belief. Corolla is old in that there is little to do at night after dinner, other than to enjoy a quiet evening at home or take a stroll along the beach. Corolla has always been known as a family beach whose lack of commercial development is considered by most to be a large part of its charm.

Corolla is home to one of the finest Rees Jones designed golf courses in the world, located in the Currituck Club. The 6,885 yard championship Currituck Club golf course offers breathtaking natural scenery, following the outline of the sound. The course is semi-private and includes both a full driving range and putting green.

If you should play a round there, be sure to stop in at the Bunker’s Grille, as the food is fresh and homemade. (Occasionally, the menu will feature a beer, broccoli and cheese soup.  Be sure to order it if it’s available!) The Bunker’s Grille is a great place to relax and enjoy your adult beverage of choice. You’ll have such a good time that the double bogey you made on 11 will quickly fade from memory…

Currituck Club real estate offers something for everyone.  Interested in a Corolla condo for sale?  Look no further than the Windswept Ridge condominiums, which have 2, 3, and 4 bedroom units available. Windswept Ridge is located on one of the highest dunes in Corolla, so spoiler alert - be prepared for breathtaking ocean and sound views, in addition to golf course views.  Windswept Ridge condo owners and their guests enjoy both outdoor community pool and tennis court amenities.

A visit to the Whalehead Club will make you believe you’ve somehow traveled back in time. Built in 1925, the 21,000 square foot structure boasted running water and electricity, and is a fine example of the Art Nouveau architecture style. The Whalehead Club has enjoyed a rather amazing history, transitioning from its original position as the grand hunting mansion of a wealthy industrialist, to playing a part in World War II, to a summer boarding school, then as a rocket fuel test site.

The Whalehead Club is sited on a magnificent piece of land that captures the beauty of the Outer Banks in grand fashion: timelessly. The Outer Banks has become one of the top wedding destinations in America, in no small part due to the beauty and splendor of the Whalehead Club.

Whalehead Club real estate listings range from smaller four bedroom homes to new construction 5000+ square feet, 10+ bedroom oceanfront homes that are tricked out from head to toe with the most decadent appointments, along with state of the art home theaters and game rooms filled with every conceivable past time to amuse both children and adults for hours on end.

Speaking of luxurious homes, Pine Island NC real estate is the premiere luxury subdivision in Corolla, and perhaps on all the Outer Banks.  These Florez and Florez designed homes boast beautiful lines and coastal styling that are easily identifiable to even the untrained eye.  Homes for sale in Pine Island enjoy many community amenities including a large, outdoor pool and outdoor tennis courts. The boarded walkways to the beach provide easy access, and the beaches here are truly stunning.

Built with nearly one million bricks, the Currituck Lighthouse is one of the most well-known Corolla attractions. While it is one long climb up (214 steps to be precise!), it’s definitely worth the trip, as the panoramic view is extraordinary. Here’s a tip: plan to climb as early in the morning or as late in the day as operating hours allow, as the midday sun creates stifling heat inside the lighthouse, and there are few windows to allow the air to circulate. And be sure to bring along a bottle of water. Full disclosure!  This climb is not for the faint of heart.  If you are not in good shape, be sure to take your time, and plan on stopping to rest at several points.  (Don’t worry, there is room for other climbers to go around you.)

The Historic Village of Corolla hosts a number of quaint retail shops and of course the Corolla Chapel. Built in 1885, it still has many of its original items and services are still held weekly.  The homes located in the Corolla Village appeal to those who remember simpler times, as many of the roads are narrow and unpaved, and the beaches here are largely uncrowded.

The wild horses of Corolla have called the Currituck Outer Banks home for the past 500 years. This small herd of horses is descended from Spanish mustangs, and the horses continue to run wild and free in the 4 wheel drive area, where the beach is the road. Several companies provide tours to view the horses, which is the best way to see them. Remember that these horses are wild, so do not approach them. Visit the Wild Horse Museum in the village of Corolla to learn more about these resilient and fascinating creatures.

Homes for sale in the 4 wheel drive area have an allure all their own.  There is no paved road.  There is no commercial development.  Your neighbors are mostly the elements, the wildlife, the sound and the ocean, with relatively few two legged neighbors to speak of.

Of course, the reason that thousands upon thousands of people return here each year are the beautiful waters and expansive beaches in Corolla. If there’s an outdoor activity you enjoy, you can do it in Corolla. From parasailing to jet skiing, from kayaking to chartering a fishing boat, it’s all here waiting for you. Surf or swim, whatever your pleasure ...complete your day by throwing a line in the water and catching your dinner!
