Spring is upon Us...Here in New Mexico, it is pretty obvious to us that it is here. Thanks to Fred Griffen for this excellent reminder
Spring 2015! Today, March 20, is the Vernal Equinox, when the Sun is at Zenith over the Earth's Equator.
Equinox means "equal night" in Latin. The length of daylight and the length of night are equal. The event is also known as the March Equinox, and it is also referred to as the Northward Equinox.
On Friday March 20, 2015, the Sun will be directly over the Equator at 18:45 UTC, which is 6:45PM U.S. Eastern Standard Time. This astronomical event announces the First Day of Spring!
Wikipedia says,
"An equinox happens each year at two specific moments in time (rather than two whole days), when there is a location (the subsolar point) on the Earth's equator, where the center of the Sun can be observed to be vertically overhead, occurring around 20 March and 22 September each year."'
Spring 2015! Thursday is the Vernal Equinox, when the Sun is at Zenith over the Earth's Equator. The length of daylight and the length of night are equal. The event is also known as the March Equinox and the Northward Equinox.
