Life is about choices and I made a few last year in the fall that are having a profound effect on my personal life and business. I can share about those later. Today, I am here to share why being a couch potato is no longer an option for me.
Last fall, I attended a real estate conference and one of my hotel roommates was obsessed with walking 10,000 steps a day. If she had not finished it by bedtime, she would walk in the hotel room until she completed her daily goal. Personally, at the time, I thought she was nuts, lol. Despite her behavior, I thought perhaps I should look into this 10k a day trend. I returned home and purchased an activity tracker to wear on my wrist. I found it to be novel and wore it daily. At times, I would even look at the app to see how many steps I took; 2,500 seemed like a lot. So after two months, I decided to set a goal to walk 3,000 steps a day in December. I was excited about my BIG goal, and committed to walking 10,000 a day in 2015 by putting it in my 2015 business plan (a.k.a. life plan).
The holidays came and I quickly forgot about that goal of 10,000 steps a day. Heck, it was tough just keeping up with my December goal of 3,000. Out of sight, out of mind. Well, at least I thought that is how it worked, until I discovered that intentions matter. At the very end of December, just days before 2015, I was added to a facebook group; the 66 Day Challenge: 10,000 Steps. The group was founded by Rancho Cucamonga Mega Agent, Laurel Starks, a woman I admire for her focus and discipline. She created the group to be accountable to herself and others. It turned out a new 66 Day Challenge was beginning on January 1, 2015, so I decided to accept the challenge. Here is the video overview:
Why 66 Days, you ask? Well, it has to do with this little book The One Thing, that Gary Keller and Jay Papasan wrote a few years back. The premise is that it takes 66 days to form a new habit, successfully. I highly recommend the book, if you have not read it yet.
I must say, 66 Days can seem like a long time, if you allow yourself to think that way. I chose to focus on one day at a time, even when I got sick in January, only 12 days into the challenge. Despite my being sick, I got back into stepping within 3 days and continued to work towards my goal and on Saturday, March 7, 2015, I reached my goal!
So, that is my story, how I eliminated being a lazy couch potato and am becoming a hot tamale. Here are a few of the benefits I have experienced so far:
- My energy level has increased
- I have lost inches and feel better in my clothes
- My friends and co-workers tell me I look great and have slimmed down
- I feel stronger in body, mind and spirit
- My clients reap the benefits, daily!
Of course, there are more benefits, that include becoming a team captain for one the March Challenge. Keeping track of our google sheet "Scoreboard" and helping group members with questions and support. It is wonderful to encourage others to be successful.

If you would like to know more about the challenge or even become part of the group, please send me a message on facebook and I will happily add you.
May you Live Long & Prosper!
