Make that "Moving to a different state? Review your will!"

Roy Kelley posted this short blog yesterday about a few of the things that may need attention when you make that move. Buyers coming here to Hawaii or any other state should check their wills too. Thanks for this heads up, Roy!

Moving to Florida? Review your will!

My wife, Dolores, and I attended a recent Wills for Realtors seminar at Village Settlements in the Kentlands community in Gaithersburg, Maryland. The presenter was Jeremiah J. Eliason, an attorney with Parker, Hollman, Simon, Hahn & DeLisi, LLC, a firm that we have used for many years. Jer's law practice focuses on estate planning and he is licensed in Maryland and Florida.

When you are in the real estate business in Montgomery County, Maryland, you learn quickly that many Maryland residents also have homes in Florida and that Florida is one of the primary destinations for retirees from our area. When planning a move to Florida, it is easy to overlook the need to review estate plans, wills and other documents relating to owned assets.

An existing Maryland will may be okay but there are circumstances that may dictate some modifications to avoid complications after death. Jer recommends a review of your estate plan and will when you are making a move to another state. The usual major considerations relate to tax liabilities, the desired distribution of assets and efforts to avoid unneeded legal fees when the estate is being administered.

Add a review of your estate plans and wills to your list of things to do as you plan to move to another state. Jer is available to provide assistance if you need his help.

Great Information.  I bet most people don't think to review their wil when they move from one state to the next.
